Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shifter upgrade

Hi, I'm new the these forms and I need some advise about a component upgrade. I have an old touring bike circa 1985 with Deore XT components, triple front chain ring and 9 back. I'd like to move the shifters to the handle bar/breaks. I looked at the Shimano Tiagra as a possibility but read some negative reviews. Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Thanks.

Pfft negative reviews, you want durable stick with tiagra or lower.

Bigger isssue may be getting the front shifter to work properly with your XT FD. I'd use barend shifters.Alot cheaper, no compativility issues and a friction bailout.

I would have to say that the best bang for the buck, and durability is LX. It has high quality (trickle down from XT), and you are not paying for the "top end" of XT or XTR.

Need to know what type brakes are on there. STI brake/shifters won't work with mtb v brakes. At best it's an extremely finicky arrangement that's regrettable.

Triple STI shifters usually do just fine with mtb fnt. der., and the rear is never a problem. I recommend 105 as a min.

Well, Shimano has many CYA statements. Deore to Ult. has worked perfectly for me. Perhaps reviewing your adjustments may help.
