Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Retail bikes

and by retail i mean retailers like walmart and target
yeah thats right, I dont see the point in spending 700 dollars on a fancy bike when I can just get a huffy bike or something like this

and it looks almost the exact same as those 700 dollar bikes
do you just want to throw your money away orsomething, dont you have something better to spendthe money on?
anyway when i was 12 i got a huffy bike from walmart for my birthday we werent too wealthy in fact we lived in a trailer with 2 other families so when i got my huffy bike it was true freedom to me
i used that bike for the next 9 years when i turned 21 and finally earned enough to buy a 92 mazda protoge with an oil leak
so if someone will please rationalize a 700 dollar bike to me i will consider it
thanks

And if it looks exactly the same, then it must have the exact same kind of ride and durability, right?

Seriously, please tell me you're joking!

Actually, I bought a $54 Glacier point 15 speed at Traget (mtn bike). Not that bad for the money. Sized too small, heavy as hell.......but I can still ride it to this day.

My choice for an only bike?.........Hell no! Rideable and functional: Yes!

Retail places don't sell bikes, they sell an image. Do you plan to actually ride the bike? If so... there's your justification.

I couldn't agree with you more. Here's my suggestion on how to spend your $700:

$100: Spend it on a bike from Wal-Mart. Hell, who am I kidding, go steel some bolt cutters and go to the local school and have your pick from the bike rack up front.

$200: Go to the local Gas'n Git'n Go and pick up $200 worth of lottery tickets, preferably scratch off's. Stand at the counter for an hour scratchin', and if you have any winners take the money and put it back into more lottery scratch off's.

$100: Pick up a month's supply of Spam, Potted Meat, or Vienna Sausage, whichever you prefer

$500: Pick up some sweet new rims for that '92 Mazda Protege

$12: Pick up a dozen roses from the roadside stand to bring to your baby's momma. Hell, get two so you can get some for your other baby's momma too.

What, that's more than $700? Well, of course it is! You're in debt, my friend. Where else would you rather be? But you got some sweet rims, something to eat, almost wond the lottery, and you'll probably get lucky with at least one of your old ladies this afternoon. Seems worth it to me. Much more than some $700 bike. Good luck, my friend, godspeed.

Before I got in to biking, I wasn't sure if my knees could take it. My Father-in-law gave me his old Schwinn W-Mart bike that had been sitting in his garage for years. Rode it around town and got to liken' it. Took it to the trails at the local park and it never rode the same again. Took it to New Orleans to pedal around Bourbon St. (The only way to go. Nothing like drinking and riding around Bourbon St. and laughing at all the tired-looking tourists from beating feet all over the French Quarter all day.)

anyhow..... that old beater fell off the bike rack when we flew throug a dip on our way home.

I figured it was time to upgrade so I bought a Trek 3500 for about three hundred dollars. I thought that was a lot of money for a bicycle but wow, what a difference. That bike got stolen right out my garage....SUCKS!!!

Once again...time to upgrade. Trek Fuel 90. $900 on Ebay. How does it ride? SWEET!!!!!!!

Now I have 4 bikes hanging on the wall at the house in the "Bike Room" and 3 or 4 beater frames and projects in the garage. Makes the wife sick.

Moral of the story.... Start off modest and if you really like biking you can upgrade.

I love upgrading.

You live in a trailer but have a computer with internet access. Sounds like you are the one that is bad with money.

Reminds me of a thread when I first joined the forums:

https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...threadid=32976

The more you ride the more you appreciate the higher quality of higher-end machines.

Well RedStatePryde if you ID refects who you are........Edit....... As for why I ask why not, my rule of thumb like that of the dimond industy, you should not spend more then 3mo. salary on a bike. Well it only a rule and they are to be broken. BlueStatesRule

You DO know that huffy went bankrupt right? now why would a company making 'quality' bikes comparable to a high-end bike go out of business? I had a huffy when i was younger, it was fine, what do i know? I thought girls had cooties... then the world changed... i found out cooties didn't exist, mazdas drives like crap, walmart is evil, budweiser tastes like piss and huffy bikes work better as stationary bikes. Would you rather drink bud or BASS ale? they look the same...

Funny, it looks nothing like my $700 bike.

Oops, I've spent $750.

Love those cheap cast resin pedals, sweeet action.
