    Weekend Cycling/Exercise Report -- May 18/19/20

Happy Victoria Day long weekend to all the Canadians. What kind of long weekend cycling are you doing this weekend?
How about the rest of you/us who are limited to a normal 2-day weekend? Are you able to get outside for a ride this weekend? Tell us all about it ... or other sports you're involved in.

Friday - got a good 3+ km walk in with some decent climbs.

Saturday - 28 km local ride. The high for the day got to 12C, and there was rain around, but we only got misted on at the beginning of the ride.

Not from today's ride, but some photos taken last year along the route we rode today ...

Went out with my fiancee today. This was our first ride together this season. She could only handle 15 miles. She's overcoming some knee injuries and is very limited in her activity by her PT.

Rain tomorrow, but I'm still planning a wet 30 miles.

RAMROD training series ride #6. 80 miles and 4400'. Dry pavement almost all the way. Tough ride this time. I think my glycogen was low from doing mileage while losing a pound a week for a few weeks. Data points are good. Having a Dottie's Seattle Lager right now.

I am trying to make it back to my pre-USA skiing vacation trip when I did not bike for the entire month of April and also managed to sprain my left knee ACL. And, it is the start of the raining season here.... Excuses, excuses.

Saturday - I woke up to thunder and lighting and a heavy rain storm at 6 am. I did not even bother changing.

Sunday - I woke up to storm clouds but no rain, so I changed and went out riding. I met up with my brother at our usual training loop next to Souvarnabumi airport in Bangkok. Just as I started, it began to rain lightly, just enough to wet the roads and dirty my bike. I figured that at least it would be cooler since it was only 80 F and 90 % humidity. But, an hour into the ride, the sun came out with a vengeance and dried the rain and kicked up the heat to 88 F. Of course, there was wind - a strong, constant hot breeze. But, I was determined to be back into shape. My brother stopped after 50 km but I continued until I had ridden 100 km, in 3 hr 40 min with a total of 15 minutes of drink refill and pb&j breaks. I drank almost 5 L of drink mix and water. I knew I had pushed myself sufficientky because, at 90 km, my heart was racing as though I was going to bonk. But, I had been monitoring my heart rate through out the ride and was pacing myself so I was able to finish with a decent average speed of 27.5 kmh over the entire ride.

Btw, the first order of business when I got home was to hose down my bike, spray Muck-Off degreaser on the drivetrain, use a chain cleaner thingy to degrease and clean the chain, then spray the drivetrain with Sonax to chase away the water and wipe the cables with lithium grease, then wipe the whole bike down. All before cleaning myself or eating lunch. I will wipe the bike down again with wax and re-lube the drivetrain with Pedro's chain lube, dry lube does not cut it in Thailand during the rainy season!

Sunday - 25.25 km on our touring bicycles.

The high for the day was 15, but I think it was a little cooler than that when we started riding. And it was down to 10C when we finished. But we had some sun!

Our ride today was up a part of the local rail trail. It was an effort because it was a climb all the way out, on a gravelly surface. But the way back was nice.

70 km through the Bragg Creek foothills. Started to rain about 10 minutes after we got back and hasn't stopped for long since then. A beautiful ride on a Saturday morning.

Just got home from my first century. 121 miles on the day with the ride to and from the start, 103.3 of that on the actual course. Well under the time I'd set as a goal/almost a mile per hour faster than my goal speed. (Okay, the goal was 8:30 including stops, 13mph moving average. Did it in 7:58 including stops, 13.9mph moving average. Slow, by the standards of the 41, but I am thrilled.)

"Adventure road ride" 68 miles, 7,000+' climbing, including 8 miles of google-earthed dirt road.

Gauntlet of residents assuring us of failure and death by mountain lion; barking dogs, stampeding cows, and at times only a vague sense of where this "road" went through tall grass. Mountain bike shoes were worn by some, & some grades layed with loose rock had to be walked.

    No casualties.

Raining and wet all day today. I went out for a hilly 25 miles. I think it was 25. The rain happened to short out my cateye velo8...maybe a good excuse to buy a garmin now

I'd use that as a sign for new shoes too!

    Happy Birthday!

You know ... as a cyclist, you have to ride your age, in one ride, at some point in the week before or after your birthday. In other words if you've just turned 36, you've got to ride 36 miles (or kilometres if you prefer) one day very soon.

Fri: My usual 32 mi. evening hill country jaunt.
Sat: Similar to above, but 42 mi. with added loop and two more tough hills.
Sun: Fixie loop from moderate hills in country, home through (abandoned on weekends) industrial park flats. Only 31 miles, but really like 40 miles due to the standard 30% fixie mileage bonus!

I had a long day at work yesterday, so I wanted to relax today. Still went on a short loop and don't regret it.

    Ride profile.

    Mid-ride pee break!

Lake ride-by picture. It was a nice 68 degrees in the morning and I was done by 9.

Also had a three mile hike with the kiddos yesterday.

40 miles out and back to the town of Buda (Byoo-duh). Summer weather pattern has set in, which means a strong wind from the south outbound and a nice tailwind on the return. This was one of my longer rides so far this year (total mileage so far is about 1/3 of what it was at this point last year) and was happy with my legs and cardio.

Saturday went to the Suncoast Parkway trail. Not my favorite MUP, but convenient to where I needed to be that morning. I had to live with some mildly annoying wheel suckers, but they were sucking on everyone they came across so it wasn’t personal just pathetic. on Sunday I did my usual tour of S. Tampa. For a change there was very little wind which made it more enjoyable. I'm back to doing 150 miles a week, which for me is pretty good. I've lost about 10 pounds since I've gotten back in the groove.

I have the same computer and do my best to not get caught out in the rain but sometimes I can't help it. Has your computer started working again or is it toast? Did you place it in a bag of rice asap?

I rode 88 miles on Friday, 38 on Saturday and 50 in Sunday. That was after doing a "7 rides in eight days" prior to the start of the weekend.
