I always taught that maintaining a higher than normal heart rate for over 20min was a way to make your heart stronger and more efficient over time, at a lower normal heart rate. hence you can lower your resting heart rate to below 60BPM.. hence, a stronger "Pump" action per stroke.

Point is that Max HR is not the limiter.
You could fall off a cliff and die.
You could get lost and die.
You could hit a tree and die.
OR YOU COULD STAY HOME AND FALL OFF THE COUCH AND DIE.

Right. But couldn't some of the decrease in potential performance be due to decrease in MHR in addition to other factors?

When comparing to yourself at different ages, sure. But not when comparing different people.

I'm 62 with a max hr of ~180 but I certainly wouldn't consider myself a pinnacle of cycling health. I'm vastly overweight for one thing and no longer ride for speed.

I attribute it more to 32 years of riding 6-8,000 miles a year and genetics.

I'm 36 years old. I can get myself to a heartrate of 207 at will.

At a gravel road race on 03/23/2013...my max was 203, and averaged 186 over 2 hours and 10 minutes.
At my last time trial on 04/27/2013...I hit a max of 205, and averaged 195 over 40 minutes.

My heartrate has always been high. I'm slower than dirt. And at my last full physical, my heart is in perfect health.

I think heartrate, by itself, means absolutely nothing.

I am re-realizing that strong legs make more difference. Turning bigger gears. Max HR has more to do with sprinting.

    Incorrect on both counts.
