Do the housing that goes into 2013 Shimano 105 shifters have a ferrule?

As the title says, I was changing bars and noticed one of the housing in the shifter didn't have a ferrule (the brake), I put on on but couldn't get it to sit flush, and felt like pushing it any harder would have been a mistake.

Am I OK without it?

No ferrule on the brake housing.
Yes ferrule on the shifter housing.

Strange, I clearly see some metal that looks like a ferrule on the other shifter's brake housing. That might explain why I couldn't pull it out.
