Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

what upgrade gives you the most bang for the buck?

I have a 2012 Trek 1.5 road bike. I have been very happy with the bike, but was considering some upgrades that would either cut weight or give a smoother ride. I am not a hardcore rider by any means, but would gladly spend $200-300 as an investment in the bike. So I was curious on how my money would best be spent. Thanks.

Normally I would agree, but tough to get upgrade worthy wheels for $200 - $300. I would say a nice set of tires, a more comfortable saddle, or some nice clothes such as new shoes, bibs, or jerseys.

Motor.

This old crazy guy said "don't upgrade your bike, ride your bike up grades."

But it's easier and more fun to spend money.

A buddy of mine bought these for 20% off the other day, but even at $250, they are the lightest wheels you will find under $300.00

Wasn't it "Don't buy upgrades; ride up grades."?

What would he know though, with a name like Eddie Merckx. Now that he is selling bikes he probably wishes people would forget that quote.

Just to be clear, these upgrades are not investments, they are expenses. The only investments are the ones to your motor.

The best bang for your buck is replacing the bearings in the derailer jockey wheels with ceramic bearings... Or just ride more.

No body mentioned a professional fit. A truly bang for the buck, IMO.

+1
When I dropped 15 pounds off my motor, I had an unexpected side benefit of my blood pressure dropping from the "pre-hyper-tension" range, to the normal range.

Tires and saddle for the bike. A good core strength and flexibility program for the engine.
