I want to buy a bike that I can use for touring, commuting, and some racing. I've had a mountain bike for years and have been using it for all of these. Here's some of my requirements:

-Rack compatible
-Relatively light weight
-More traditional design (so far I like the look of the Genesis Croix de Fer out of all the bikes I've found)
-Able to take on dirt roads, etc. if needed

I've been looking for used bikes for a while now, but haven't found anything that really fits my criteria. Some of the best options I've found have been the Bianchi Volpe or Cannondale Tour. However, I'm starting to lean toward buying a new one, preferably around $1000 or less.

Here are just some of the bikes I've considered. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Or comments on whether these would be good choices for me? I'm not sure if I should go for a touring, cyclocross, or what the main difference there even is.

Genesis Croix de Fer (don't think these are sold in the US, so it's probably out of the picture)

That frame is on sale for $209, matching steel fork with eyelets for $50...you could build that up for about budget with a careful parts pick.

Thanks, those all seem like good options. Haven't heard much about Motobecane before. There are a lot of models - any suggestions on specific ones?

And does anyone know about the Charge Filter? Seems like a good deal and close to what I'm looking for. Would it be a good commuter/touring bike? I think it would hold full panniers, while the Juicer wouldn't?
