Garmin 800 or 510??
right now garmin has a $100 rebate on the 800 and PBK has it for $410 (with HRM and Cadence, so net price of $310 for it) or would I be better off with a newer generation 510??? at the moment some of the cooler 510 features like the live tracking I can't use since I only have a crappy blackberry phone from work, though that should be upgraded to iPhone by end of year.
thoughts??

I don't know where you work, but some company poloicies do not allow users to download certain apps so even when you get the iPhone your job may or may not allow you to do so. That being said, if you can get a great deal on the 800, I don't think you can go wrong. Make sure it fits your needs ultimately. I have the lowest model garmin egde 200 and I'm fine with it for my recreational purposes. I got it for $100 and I'm happy with it. To answer your question though....imho....get that 800 if you can get it for $310.

quite the opposite, I like the 800, but, I'm entertaining the idea of a 510 if there is a compelling reason for it over the 800, in truth I'd want an 810 but I simply can't afford it and a regular 500 probably would satisfy my needs. however, the $100 rebate makes the 800 compelling and at that price point (which is a bit of a stretch for me) I'm trying to decide which would be the better long term choice if I'm gonna make that stretch.

I recently bought the 800.
perusing the web I found this site which I found very helpful

If the 810 or 510 uploaded to Strava I might have leaned in that direction

I perosnaly like the 500 or 510 for the size. Also i have the impression that the 510 screen is difficult to read frim some angles. Maybe im wrong, someone plz correct me. I say this cause a good friend of mine bought his 510 and remains using his old cyclo computer cause he finds it a bit difficult to read the garmin.

My rides upload fine to Strava via usb with the 800 as I am sure they do with the 810 and all other Garmin devices.
While the Garmin app is cool I did not see a great advantage of the bluetooth 810 vs non bluetooth 800 and the rebate pushed me from the 500 to the 800
I was running the iphone app which taxed my battery and I lost some data on longer ride and had the same problem with the old Forerunner 305 which the battery did not last as long as my ride time. I felt it was time to step up to a better device

Do you really think people are going to want to live track you? If so, get a 510. As somebody else said, if the 510/810 uploaded to strava AND garmin connect automatically I'd probably upgrade. Until then, I'm still gonna have to plug the thing in every ride to upload to strava so part of the purpose is defeated.
BTW, the non-bundle 800 is $229 after rebate. Pretty awesome deal.

Big difference is the Bluetooth on the 510 and 810.
The 800 has turn by turn mapping that the 510 does not have. You can download "courses" onto the 500 and 510...but it don't tell you where to go.
I have the 510 and the screen isn't as bad as people say. It may be a bit harder to see in extreme bright sun...but I've never had an issue with not being able to read it.
If you don't care about all the new bling...actually the 500 will do the job just fine.

For the OP's question, depends on how much screen you like to see/how often you look at it. I found the 5xx series too difficult to read when I dialed it up to 400 watts.

I just got my 800 from here for 309:
https://www.westernbikeworks.com/product/garmin-edge-800
I'll probably be able to get 130 or so for my 500 and all the sensors can stay right where they are. Pretty hard to not want that little upgrade.
Doesn't the 510 come bundled with that garmin "out front" mount? Those things run about $40, so that's not a bad consideration either

Well, if you're thinking of the navigational aspect of the 800 would be your bet with the maps? (You can get them for free, don't let the £100 prices for maps put you off).
I sort of had to get an 800 over a 510 (I was stuck between the two), as I was going to use it for leading me on rides I had never done before (downloaded from other users) and I think the 800 has a bigger screen? If you're a data-geek like myself, the big screen helps see even more stuff at once.
Slightly off-topic -As for Strava, I'm happy just sticking my Garmin in the computer to do it, I'm yet to be in a situation where immediate upload to Strava would help... And Garmin.Connect is just as good with more features (I'm thinking route and workout downloads).
