Gear shifting "strategy" with road bike

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

But does it really matter? If it's too hard, shift down. If too easy, shift up. If you're out of gears, you know you're already doing the best you can.
Looking at the cassette is what I do, though it does not feel that safe since I for some reason wobble a tad on the left as I do so...

But the rest is probably the smartest approach

Nice bike. Worry less, ride more. Ride at a cadence that feels comfortable, change gear when you feel you need to. That's about it.
