Blasted by a semi today...justice is mine

I'm out on my lunch ride today which is normally 16 miles out and back. On the return with less than a mile to go, I get the 18" pass, swerving rear tires, plus the horn blast from a jerk weed semi driver.

Moral to the story...If you are going to buzz a cyclist in a company semi, make sure he isn't the Plant Manager of the company next door to yours, and definitely make sure he doesn't know your Plant Manager. :D

They aren't firing the guy, but he is being sent through a refresher safety course and reprimanded. Maybe he'll learn a lesson.

You must be feeling pretty smug right now :P

ClydesMoose 06-14-13 01:55 PM

Win.

That's awesome! Hopefully he's learned his lesson.

Your post needs to be scratch and sniff so we can smell the smug as well. Nice job though I think.

He may well learn something. In addition to damaging the company's image, those who drive unsafely represent a liability. My guess is that they're pretty serious about communicating professional expectations.

TrojanHorse 06-14-13 03:08 PM

Ah, to be young and smug again. Alas, all I have left is smug.

Well done.

THSdrummer 06-14-13 03:15 PM

I'll be writing in "SmellTheSmug" on my next Presidential ballot.

Well played.

Well, that really is the thing. All joking aside, the corporate, as well as personal liability attached to that type of recklessness is staggering. I always make the effort to make direct contact with a business manager, when I see something like this occurring. When I have received complaints about the behavior of my own drivers in the past, I have come down on them like a ton of bricks and most guys responsible for a business will have the same attitude. Allowing a clown to endanger the financial well being of a business is not acceptable and is rarely tolerated if you can reach the right person.

That is the complete problem with cycling. When you are young and fast you can't afford the cool stuff. When you are middle aged and slow, you have all the cool toys and guys make fun of you for having equipment better than you ride. Oh well, they'll just have to be jealous and make fun. :D

I do hope you're joking.

Be careful about overly criticizing His Highness. He'll find out where you work and you'll wind up attending mandatory training classes too.

18" pass, horn blast, and expressing wonder at what could have been wrong?

Even here, that's too unbelievably stupid to take seriously. You can rest easy.

You must be kidding. Threatening someone with a rig is so unbelievably dangerous, stupid, and unprofessional that he should be pulled off the road. And yes, I have driven for a living (though that was more than 20 years ago). The drivers where I worked could lose their jobs for much less.

I've been riding for decades in every condition imaginable and I think I've had something like he described happen maybe twice. The vast majority of drivers are very professional and there's no excuse for what that one did.

Maybe, but I'll try first.

1. Let's leave off the politics.
2. We have a forum for arguing about where cyclists do/do not belong. Regulars there live for that in fact. Feel free to join them.
3. I'll confess to bias. OP has a nice story and I would like to see this thread last.

I would like to hear what the driver has to say. And shame on anyone for reprimanding someone on hearsay.
Oops. Can't be hearsay because the plant managers are friends. Of course its true.

kenji666 06-14-13 08:00 PM

Judge, jury, and executioner. What more do you need?

He probably has a valid excuse like when he was lighting up his weed, his beer slipped between his knees.

OK then. The driver got what he deserved.
Is that the appropriate response?

Walter 06-14-13 08:21 PM

This thread is slowly slipping away. If you really want to argue the "right to the road" please go to Advocacy and Safety.
If you want to get into politics please take it to Politics and Religion.

I might suggest that a site with the name BikeForums.net might be sympathetic to cyclists. No doubt there are plenty of pro driver sites. Just say'n.
