Help, trying to sell my bike, but no clue how much it's worth

Hi, I'm hoping someone could give me some advice. Unfortunately I'm selling my trusty road bike for some much needed cash. However, I have no idea how much it's worth at all. The bike was "originally" a Bianchi Imola, which is a steal frame w/ carbon fork/seat post, and cost about $1500. However, I upgraded the components to Ultegra 6700 (which cost like $1,400) and put on a new wheel set (Mavic Cosmic Elite, around $500).

I posted it on Craigslist http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/bik/3871049034.html with a price definitely on the high side ($2,400), but wanted to play it safe until I got some advice. Can anyone give me some feedback? I'm aware it might be a hard sell with a steel frame, despite having (some) nice components, but hopefully somebody will appreciate it as much as I did

    Thanks!
    Mike

Go to ebay and search "Completed Listings" for something as close as possible to what you have. That will show actual sold prices .... And ones that didn't sell, perhaps because they were priced too high.

A complete Ultegra 6700 group is under $800 brand new. Figure half that for your used group. Maybe $300 for the wheels, $500 for frame and fork. That's $1200 but honestly I doubt you could get that.

You asked $2400 for a bike that currently sells for $1400? That is a tough sell. Nice bike and you've put some money in it. I'd keep it.

Find a comparable steel bike with an ultegra gruppo. That is what a new similar bike would cost. Then you have to discount it since the bike is used. The discount rate should be a little lower in a market like Portland. Also you need to know the details of your bike (get some help if you need it) as that will help sell it. You should be able to sell that bike in Portland without mucking around with e-bay.

If I bought a vintage steel Bianchi, it would be Celeste green.

If you do sell on ebay, and you live in a populated area, you can select "local pickup only" to avoid the whole shipping risk and hassle.

Here in Illinois your bike would go for no more than $200.
