Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Talk about Beets

Hey guys,

recently i read a bit about beet juice and how some people cant get enough of it. Sometime ago as read about pro racers drinking it.

Any of you drink it regularly? Sounds like a healthy choice against other more artificial ways of nutrition.

Also saw that you can get powdered beet for pretty good prices around the net.

cheers,

Fads come and go, probably more in diet and nutrition than in almost any other area. A year ago, kale was a "C" list salad green. Now you see it on every menu. Apparently it's beets' turn now.
They're nutritious. You can google the data. Personally, I don't care for the taste, and other vegetables or combinations of vegetables are equally good for you.
As for beet juice and powdered beets, I'm guessing, but in general you lose fiber and nutrients drinking juice instead of eating the whole fruit or veg, and the drying process certainly doesn't come without some cost. Vitamin C, for instance, is fairly easily destroyed by heat.

Beets are great and so are many other veg'es...

Just remember its the all and varied diet that rules - It is odd but not surprising that the animals diet that most closely resembles the whole food diet and palate of the human is the bear - You would think it would be a primate...

But then again a bear will travel 20 miles for a sweet and tear a locked dumpster apart for pizza...

Come to think of it... Don't they too ride bicycles...

trends come and go in the food industry as any other. vary your intake of fats/carbs/proteins and you too can achieve a balanced diet.

I've always loved beets and have recently started juicing and have come a crossed a few good recipes that call for beets that are really quite good.

I have read that beets do have a positive effect on cycling performance with regard to red blood cells. I haven't started adding them to my spinach smoothies yet, but would love to be encouraged one way or another....

Beets taste like dirt, make everything red, and make you worried that you're pooping blood.

Anything that begins with a beet, ends with the Devil- Ukrainian proverb.

I guess that explains why I like them so much....

Beets are an interesting addition to hamburgers ... along with a pineapple ring, fried egg, strips of bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and of course, the meat and bun.

i can vouch for this. I've had at least two patients come in and swear they were having bright red blood in the BM, but it was their beet salad.

I have to agree the attention paid to beets seems bandwagonny. Still, it be fun to be able and substitute all gel and packaged food with natural resources.

Ive noticed im the only guy in my group that carries bananas. And home made food (ej peanut butter jelly sandwich). Sometimes i dream of just bringin a lot of water melon along(ridiculous).

Knowing what to mix in nature to get effects like GUs Rocktain or hammers perpetum.

I hated beets until I decided to grow my own. Red beets, white beets, yellow beets, candy-striped beets. Beets pulled fresh from the ground taste awesome. Must be something about cooking them while they are still alive. Boiled, roasted, grilled, slaw, pickled. mmmmm mmm.

What again does this have to do with cycling?

If it weren't for this, I be drinking beet juice. However, I don't need another source of anxiety.

It’s in the dietary nitrate that beet’s offer that promotes the generation of nitric oxide responsible for the dilation of the blood vessels that work to support blood circulation, oxygen delivery, uptake and efficiency to and for our cells. There have been a few studies using cycling athletes demonstrating positive but nothing IMO studied in a controlled scope that would demonstrate beets alone as conclusive and extraordinary.

That said I do incorporate beets into my well balanced diet. And as a couple of the posters here I agree with have alluded to; it’s the combination of a vast array of (organic if possible) non-processed, non-GMO, whole food sources that should be eaten in the combination that our bodies were optimally designed to break down and absorb.

My consideration with any of these popular “discoveries” or “fads” is that isolating a particular food item without a well balanced supporting cast works for nothing and fortunately this is what many have come to understand with their own experimentation. Point is that there is nothing singularly that sets itself apart as the holy grail of foods…it’s in the enzymatic party that goes on amongst the foods.

The magic and hopeful promise I think for an individual is finding that perfect dietary balance that gives them their optimum capacity for overall health and performance...and I'm pretty confident Beets play a part

Basically, eat real food, and don't put the stuff from the bike shop in your body.
