Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Orange County to San Diego

Hey guys, I'm not sure where to get bike routes and stuff, and within the next couple of weeks I'm hoping to test my endurance and ride from Mission Viejo to San Diego, possibly SDSU...If anyone can help me out with any links or info on where to get the best routes for getting to San Diego, I'd appreciate it

theres the route from San Juan Cap to Delmar, bout 50 miles on that trip, you can get to UCSD allot easier then SDSU. I'll ask my friends for the maps tomorrow on that route. My friends take amtrak up north then ride the 50 down.

this isn't a complete answer to your problem, but it may be of minor concern that you MIGHT have to ride on the freeway between las pulgas road and the harbor exit in oceanside.
it won't be the most enjoyable part of the ride, but i always tell people it's pretty amazing how much faster one can ride with the nagging prospect of taking an 80mph car in the butt.

San Deigo COunty Recreation - Parks has a cycling map..Easy until you get south of UCSD..Basically just follow the old 101...Might be difficult to get through Camp Pendleton if you are not military..In that case you have to travel on I - 5...South of UCSD I would consult the county parks map, for it is a little too tricky to describe..Lots of road changes should you follow the suggested route.
Towards SDSU..There are some designated bike lanes roughly paralleling Mission Valley , originating from the Sea World area..

to go through the base, you need a helmet and ID, no helmet = 8 miles on the freeway. Shouldn't take long if you hop on the freeway, jus draft off the tallest guy u can find, the headwinds are nasty when we have this low pressure in the area.

are you sure? seems like the last 20 times we've gone up that way, we get turned away and have to take the freeway.

You'll get turned away at the base due to the heightened security during this time of political unrest in the middle east...unless you have a military i.d.

DOg...no..De Luz rd intersects north of Fallbrook heading down into the DeLuz valley towards Temecula...Travel Mission north..at the corner of Mission and Main just head north..You are on DeLuz Rd..If it technically goes through Pendleton property, there is no gate - all the way to Temecula..You got quite a climb ahead of you going into Temecula..When you are in the Deluz valley, two roads branch off. (Sandia Creek) know which road you prefer.
I feel lucky..ONe member of our group has retired military id..We almost always travel through the base..Unless there is some security problem.
The only gate adjacent Fallbrook and Pendleton is the AMmunition gate..coming from the west of Fallbrook.

dog hair...Have not heard any stories tonight..WIll keep posted .raining like hell tonight. in years past the DeLuz valley flooded and some of the unlucky homes in this valley residents had to be helicoptered out...As to biking this deep valley with the Santa Margarita river running through it..I would wait a couple days.

Thanks for the help guys, I'm just kinda getting into all of this, and so far the most I've ridden in a day is 50 miles, so I'd like to see what it takes to get some mileage in and all.

stoked! i guess i know which way i'm riding today

allgoo, try mapquesting it. it's hard to describe, but pretty straightforward. there's a bike path down near tressels. take that to where it mergest with the road that goes past san onofre. ride towards the powerplant -- wave at the guard holding the M16. you'll eventually come to a campground -- ride through the campground south of the power plant. once you're at the end of the campground, the road turns into another bike path. follow the path and go through the tunnel under the freeway. when you come out on the other side, you'll have an option of going straight or turning right. TURN RIGHT. you will suddenly come out on an airstrip. ride all the way to the end of the airstrip. at the end, you'll find a parking lot. take a LEFT out of the parking lot and the las pulgs gate is a couple hundred yards up the road. ask the guard for directions.
i know it's only 12 miles from the san clemente pier to las pulgas, so it's pretty easy.

zealot, thanks again. weather's awesome today!

Thanks, dog hair, I'll write it down. There must be many other cyclist on the route, if the weather is good. I'll just follow them and make good friends. One of them maybe you.

Look what I found.

Simple but pretty easy to follow map.

dog hair, thanks for the help with everything, I'll be sure to bring some cash with me. I'm going to try and make it to SDSU because I've got a friend who said I can shower and change at her place, and stay over to ride home the next day. If I can't figure out how to get to SDSU, I'll have her meet me somewhere in SD, and toss my bike in her car

if you take the left fork which was repaved a few yrs ago, it has more blinf turns then the right fork. Also the left fork has 3-4 waer crossing before it meets w/ the right fork, then another 2 water crossings before going to Rancho Cali Road. In the summer, there is 2-3" of water going over the road, I'm sure those "streams" are not shallow anymore and would be bit hairy to cross on a roadie. Flooded road w/ moss grew into the pavement isn't exactly traction friendly. For a bike ride, take the right fork through the hills and naborhood and back or to Temec then to 395

Nate...Found my S.D. Bike map...Yes, you can bike all the way to SDSU..No problem...Think I would suggest following Genessee Ave. from Torrey Pines...Takes you to area of Hotel Circle...follow east through Mission valley up...GO south on Montezuma and you are at SDSU...Bike map says so...So minor turns on to other streets , but that is basically it...
Dog Hair..Without actually hearing..Right now..I am pretty darn sure DeLuz valley would have some pretty high water ..I would wait a couple days..Will likely meet up with Fallbrook cyclist friends today...Get back later.
