Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Proper Riding Attire

Hey guys,

Lamest question to date but I guess there could be a reason for some concern. I know it has been talked about before but I really couldnt find a definitive answer. My parents are in london at the moment and they enjoy buying some cycling souvenirs where ever they go to bring back to me. So today my father called me with great pride and very happy to tell me that he got me an original Le Coq Sportif 100 Year Yellow Jersey Pro. I know some people find it lame, and you should only wear one if you earn it, at the same time I really dont care if I didnt earn it and would love to use it since it is actually a very good Jersey. I wont tell my parents to return it because that would be rude as ***** yet I wanna know what you guys REALLY think. Is this something that people will start talking p00p and harrassing me about? Should I buy a gun to protect myself from the Yellow Jersey police? I am being serious, yet there might be a chance that it's me being insecure and naive.

Thanks

Isn't it june? What's up with all these threads that used to be made in January?

One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was "what other people think of you is none of your business". Think about that.

Go ride your damn bike.

Wear it. Let people talk, do you really care what someone you probably don't know says? Besides, it will make you happy and your dad happy he scored you something you enjoy so much.

The "you didn't earn it" criticism is so ridiculous. It only matters if you are pretending you did. Is there any chance your cycling buds will think you are pretending you just got back from winning the TDF. I don't think so. Its clearly a replica. Considering all the really significant issues facing the human race these days, who has energy to worry about what color shirt (yep, I hate to say it, but that is what it actually is, a shirt) you are wearing on a bike ride. Anyone who invokes a "rule" about this can put it where the sun don't shine.

Awesome! I will wear with pride, like I just earned it. I am actually pretty excited since it is actually my first replica shirt.

Just wear it and if someone asks say, it was a gift or tell them you're color blind or tell them they're color blind.

How old are you again? Choosing your clothes according to some lame ass opinions on a forum is not a way to live. You really have to make up your own mind and avoid making decisions based on the number of "Likes" on social media page.

But yeah, wear that thing proud if only to just piss people off....specially those that think you don't deserve it!

If you are a "serious" roadie you cannot I repeat cannot be seen in such a frivolous piece of clothing. If you cycle for fun and fitness wear what you like. I love seeing middleaged Clydes slowly puffing up a hill in a polkadot jersey.

People are going to take one look at you, see that you are definitly not someone who won a stage, and figure your just a fan of the sport. Just like all the people who wear pro team football jerseys. Wear it as a fan, not as if you earned anything.

The worst that will happen, is someone will ask you what you think of the bus that won stage 1.

OP is from Atlanta. And we have great weather the last two days. Cartersville Century and GA400 Centuries. Last year, Cartersville was a record setting 105 for here, Garmin reporting 113 on the pavement.

This year, cool and breazy. High of 85. Got a fantastic 200mile weekend... granted today... I was pretty sluggish.

My point... OP has no excuse to get out and ride.

Tell them you were in bar with a bunch of drunks. Someone bet you and you said "how much?" You won the bet and got the jersey from a former Tour leader.
