Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Actually, I think he made excellent decisions. He evidently participated in a sport where all - or virtually all - the top competitors were using PED's, and he arguably did it more intelligently and better than anyone else. And really almost got away with it, if not for some ego-driven mistakes later which caused him not to retire quietly. I guess those were bad decisions.

It's okay for actors to dope. It's encouraged, really.

The last time Lance rode RAGBRAI he caused a bit of a controversy when he said his favorite pie was coconut cream. Iowa is fruit pie country, cowboy!

Being an Iowan I have to stand up for RAGBRAI a bit. It is a great bike ride. If you go you will enjoy yourself immensely. There are over 10000 bicycles riding across Iowa. And yes you will see all types of bicyclists. Including "freds on mountain bikes" You will also find riders just like yourself. In the past I have seen riders who have truly motivated me. For example a bicyclists pushing a downs syndrome child across the state. Typically there are riders from every state in the nation and 15 foreign countries who all love biking. Why else would you come to Iowa in the last week in July for a vacation.

Regarding the beer drinking and PARTYING until all hours of the night. Yes you can find this on RAGBRAI. But you will also find people who go to bed at 9 PM and get up at sunrise to ride. The same goes for riding ability. Like everything on RAGBRAI you just do what you want.

The small communities really work hard to host RAGBRAI and very friendly. It is truly a unique event that you should consider doing at least once. My last RAGBRAI was in 2009 and I am doing it again this year. I can not wait.

And yes being an Iowan I will even welcome Lance. Of course if he buys me a beer or piece of pie then he is a friend for life!

And LeClaire is home to that cutie, Danielle, on American Pickers. Plus one her bosses at Antique Archaeology is an antique bicycle nut.

The Mid-West 24 Hour race has been run out of there, too. Just based on that, Iowans are good people in my experience.
