    Sram Apex Questions

I'm hoping to upgrade my sora/tiagra mix components to Sram Apex. I found a gruppo used, and I was wondering if I could use the apex front and rear derailleur on a 3x9 setup. Once again, I'm hoping to upgrade my shifters and derailleurs, but nothing else.
    Thanks!

Edit: I'm very short on money so I can't afford to get a new cassette. Realistically, I all really need to replace are my shifters (I hate sora) and my front derailleur. If any more details are needed, ask.
    Thanks!

Why don't you just get a cassette and chain as well and go 10 speed?

No it probably won't work, but you need to add some more details. Your question is very vague.

I would suspect that if you're short on money, replacing the cassette should be a cheaper solution than replacing parts of the group.

Your derailleurs needs to work with your shifters, so you probably won't get away with cherrypicking a FD with shifters and getting away with it.

How does the cassette relate into your front derailleur? If there's shifting issues with the cassette, that would involve your RD, no?

Theres no problems specifically with any of my derailleurs, but sora front derailleurs aren't great. The reason the cassette was talked about is because I've heard that sram works better with a 2x10.

My suspicion is if you need to go to apex, you'll need shifters, FD, RD cassette and chain. That's assuming that you get a shifter to work with your triple chainring (you said 3x9)

If the front derailleur has problems, check the high and low screw, and FD alignment. I suspect that if you hate the thumb shifter on Sora (one of the reasons why I didn't get the Sora), and you're doing this on a budget, you might be able to swap to a set of 9-sp Tiagra.

I'm not a fan of shimano shifters (used to use a 9-sp Ultegra), but the 10-sp Tiagra is quite nice.

While Sram did just come out with Red and Force 11 speed, all other (and older) Sram road groups are 2 x 10.

A right/rear Apex shifter will only index with a 10 speed Sram or shimano compatible cassette, and you will also need a 10sp chain and Sram RD to go with it.

On the front, Shimano double FDs will work with Sram, but it sounds like you have triple crank and FD so I'm guessing you will need to upgrade those too. But I have never tried to set one up so I guess I can't guarantee it won't work.

Pretty much any double crank should work with Apex shifters.

So you guys recommend replacing the FD and cassette, and then getting the new shifters? Would the 10spd shifters work on the 9 spd cassette or do i need to replace that too?
For reference, here's what I hope to get. http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/bik/3910350519.html
    Thanks!

You will need a 10 speed cassette to use that rear shifter.

$100 for all of that is a good deal if it's in good working order. You will need a 10sp cassette but those can be purchased on the cheap. It looks like they are including a 10sp crank so I would recommend using it. Running a 10sp chain on a 9sp crank is not advisable. When I looked into doing that I read stories about the slightly narrower 10sp chain falling in between the chainrings causing it to lock up.
