Too slow for CF wheels?

Anyone feel like theyre too slow to be riding on carbon fiber wheels? Like they don't deserve it? I guess this could apply to expensive bikes too. My set of Reynolds wheels has been sittin in the box for almost 6 months now cuz I keep telling myself that I don't deserve them. In a sense it's good because it's making me work harder, but this is rather silly because there's no such thing as "fast enough"

How do I get over this? Set some kind of goal to reward myself? Weight? Time?

RPK79 07-03-13 02:30 PM

Send them to me. I'll ride on them. I don't care if I'm fast enough or not.

mattm 07-03-13 02:39 PM

The question isn't are you too slow for them, it's are you too poor.

Apparently you aren't too poor, so ride the damn things!

canam73 07-03-13 02:41 PM

Enough with the self loathing. Ride the fricken' wheels.

tagaproject6 07-03-13 02:44 PM

Yup, those people passing you are laughing. Forget the wheels, you don't deserve the bike you ride on.
:trainwreck:

RJM 07-03-13 02:48 PM

You clearly don't deserve them...donate them to the poor.

I'm poor.

Nothing wrong about aero wheels, but if you're actually looking for a speed gain, it makes a lot more sense to get an optimized bike fit first - a lot less expensive and a lot more bang for the buck.

If you're getting the wheels just for the looks, nothing wrong with that, just get 'em and be happy.

Yes please.

Aero helmet and proper position offers far more significant gain.....but some guys gotta have that BLING.....

Well, that was a great use of your money.

Vlaam4ever 07-03-13 03:26 PM

sounds like you need to grow a pair. and HTFU. Put the wheels on the bike and abuse them like they deserve to be.

RPK79 07-03-13 03:26 PM

Take a hammer to them.

escarpment 07-03-13 03:28 PM

I think other people are too slow for their expensive bikes.

pallen 07-03-13 03:31 PM

You should have had this conversation with yourself before the purchase...

bt 07-03-13 03:35 PM

it's the speedsuit that's got everyone laughing.....

Hahaha. How'd you know! Loved the responses. Thanks guys. We can /thread, but I think you guys still have a bit more to give.

I have a set of reynolds dv46 clinchers I have ridden about 100 miles in the past year. :( Got a great deal on them brand new and I could probably sell them and come up even at least.

Part of it is I don't feel fast enough (although I'm a lot faster than when I bought them) and part of it is some of the gnarly descents here.. but I also usually use my 32 spoke trainer powertap and it seems weird to mount a cf front wheel and have a tank of a rear wheel. :p Having power data during and after a ride helps me go faster than the nice looking wheels too.

Seattle Forrest 07-03-13 03:54 PM

Look, the wheels aren't doing you any good sitting in a box. If you feel too weird about it to ride them, your best bet is to sell them.

But you'd better not shave your legs and be ok with that if you feel weird about riding carbon wheels.

I think that if you ride a CF wheelset on a $1000 bike it is cool.....if you ride a CF wheelset on a CF $5K bike and wear a matching Pro Kit and you sux.....you should be stoned by GROUP of CAT 5 RACERS.

JoelS 07-03-13 04:46 PM

OP, that's just stupid. Put 'em on your bike (along with the appropriate brake pads) and ride it. In reality, no one cares. Ride 'em.

I'm poor.

Plus, it would be hilarious to see pictures of your Roadeo with CF wheels on a Rivendell forum.
