Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How long did it take for your 540's to wear out? When they did, did it just make it hard to stay clipped in?

Speedplay forever!

I had Look Keo pedals, and they were so hard to get out of.. or get in to. I'm never going back to that form factor (be it Look or Shimano) again.

I like my Bebops. After Ti spindle upgrade they are 150gr for a set and the cleats are indestructible. I just wouldn't walk in them on hardwood floors.

I too find road shoes less than the best. I use eggbeaters with shimano mo87 shoes. As light many road pedal combinations and I can walk all over. Never has slowed me down and clip in 4 sided entry I save over others clipping in.

Speed play SS zero on both road bikes. My old, worn out knees love the float.

I really like the Time Iclic 2 pedals for their ease of entry/exit and security, but their cleats don't last very long.

Look Keo 2 Max is my choice.
Platform as stable as Shimano SPD-SL and it has better free float.
I am at 4000 miles from a pair of cleats and still going strong.

I use Time (RXS), but regardless, I think you should just try a different brand, just for the heck of it, something other than Speedplay. Speaking of Time, the weight of their regular, non-carbon pedals is just about the same as their carbon fiber ones, so you can do your experiment without spending a lot.

I'm the kind of guy who likes good stuff and is willing to pay for it, but am not looking to marry bike gear. I'm not looking for something that I can pass on to my kids because I just like trying different stuff every now and then.

This is exactly where I am with this. Love the Speedplay's, but I just want to give something else a try, well, just because. I hear good things about Time, with the only caveat being that their cleats seem to wear a bit quickly.....yes??

I've been on a pair of Time Expresso 8's for about 3 month (~2000 miles) and I really like them. All of the fear mongering and online maligning has proven to be pure BS in my case. Great pedal and cleats are going strong!!!!!!!

I was on Look Keo, and regular Looks for years. Then, in my advancing years, I started to have some pains that were traced back to Q-factor (distance of pedals from bike). Turns out Speedplay is pretty much the best game in town for that so Speedplay it is. They are sort of growing on me, especially since they are now more comfortable than my Looks.

That said, I like the looks too.

1 year. I had them on the bike I use for club rides only, so once a week for about 7 months (Canada eh.) The plastic centre piece wore out and movement got sloppy. I switch to 105 after finding a good deal at PBK. Otherwise a solid pedal. I gave them to a junior who removed the plastic bit and filled the holed with urethane IIRC.

This fella describe the shortcomings with that pedal : https://craig.mcgregor.gen.nz/2011/06...and-silly.html

I picked up a set of the Mavic Race Ti pedals a few months ago when they went on sale for a crazy price, and after riding with them so far, I'd definitely buy another pair at full price if I had to.

Thanks for all the info. I've always used Crank Brother Quattros, but recently the mainspring has been breaking about once a year. I send them back to the manufacturers and they fix them, but I'm thinking it may be time for a change.
