Funny story, years ago I was reading a local bicycle publication that listed clubs in the area. I saw that among them was a gay, lesbian club. Well the next day I was out on my bike and saw a pack of 30 or more riders all wearing matching pink jerseys and thought that this was them. Turns out it was Lightning Velo and not the gay club.

It DOES NOT matter, and I said it already in my original post. But I'm wondering if cycling as a sport is welcomed by all sections of society, or is the image of cycling unappealing to some sections of society.

This is all just idle curiosity. Because when it comes to keeping fit and maintaining their body fat percentage, pro riders and gay guys on par.

Our local LGBT club has pretty stylish kit. It doesn't look half bad on me. (Not that any spandex looks good on me...) No pink but a rainbow for sure

The part I like best is the small print just above the butt: "If you're looking at this then this Is the club for you."

I assumed that the proportion in the the peloton is the same as in the general population. Only because there is no proof otherwise. If there exists some data to suggest that it's higher or lower than the general population, that would be interesting to see.

Now, just to be clear, this question in no way relates to my own sexual preferences, not that there's anything wrong with that but I was curious if there is diversity in the biking world.

A related question: Do you personally know a gay/lesbian cyclist? I haven't come across one yet. Everyone in the Forum seems to be a single or a happily married hetero.

    Cheers!
There are no openly gay pro riders in TdF. In fact, as far as I know, there are no active openly gay male pro cyclists, period. Graeme Obree is gay but he's retired. There are a few lesbian pro cyclists. In the women's time trial in the 2012 UCI world championship, #1 and #6 competitors were openly lesbian.

They shouldn't be wearing rainbow colors, not because of any prejudice, but because they did not earn a world championship.

I brushed up on my Stats... for the statistic 3.5% to apply to the peloton sampling, the sample size needs to be determined for a given confidence interval, say 95%. Not only that, the sample has to be pre-filtered for cyclists. The proportion of cyclists in the general population is so small, we may never achieve the critical sample size needed to generate a statistic.

This also links to my other post asking if cycling is popular in the GLBT population to the same percentage as the general population. It would be interesting to know.

Unbelievable. I'll bet you think that all black people got rhythm, too.
There have been many days when I haven't felt like riding, but there has never been a day when I was sorry I rode.

I don't know about gay, but when Thomas Voeckler grimaces on a climb, he kinda looks like Dewey Crowe, from Justified. Just sayin'...
