Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New cassette older pinarrelo

Well still shooing for a new bike and riding my 99 pinarrelo Paris right now it's got 2 gears on the front and 8 on the back it's a full campagnolo chorus system was thinking about get a new cassette the chorus 11 cassette. My first question is can i put a new chorus cassette on a older chorus setup. What would be a good climbing cassette to get gear wise. Thanx for any help you can give me.

Sorry to say, you cannot replace an 8 cog cassette with an 11 cog cassette without also changing derailleurs, chainrings, and shifters. It would be hard to recommend appropriate climbing cassettes with knowing the tooth count on your chainrings (aka "front Gears")

I would just get a new 13-26 8-speed cassette and call it a day.

So what's wrong with the current setup??

As above you would need at least new shifters which will be expensive and you imply you are getting a new bike soon anyway so I suggest ride what you have.

If all you can find are 11-speed cassettes, you're not looking hard enough: https://www.universalcycles.com/shopp...48&category=42

You can upgrade the right shifter to 9 speed with replacement of a ratcheting device inside, change your chain and cassette and be good to go. I did this in 2002 and found improved shifting performance from the 9 vs 8.

Maybe.

Early 8-speed Campy stuff cannot be upgraded. Later 8-speed stuff can. It really depends. 99, I think, is the later stuff.

Also, you may need new wheels if you want to upgrade to 11-speed. Some 8-speed stuff has a different spline pattern on the freehub.

No. You'd need a new freehub (the splines changed moving to 9 cogs and alloy freehubs), rear derailleur (the actuation ratio changed), and shifters.

What would be a good climbing cassette to get gear wise. Thanx for any help you can give me.
13-23 and run a triple crank up front. Your left lever will run it using 7 of 12 clicks. You can get the required derailleurs and crankset on the used market for not a lot of money; likely about what you'd pay for a Chorus 11 cog cassette. 9 speed new ratio derailleurs (have a screw and rack on the lower pivot instead of the conventional B-tension adjustment) are officially compatible with 8 speed shifters although you're supposed to run a 9 speed chain due to the narrower pulleys. Old 9 speed derailleurs (conventional B tension adjustment) have the same actuation ratio and the same caveat applies.

30x23 is like 39x30 where the 30 cog is bigger than the largest currently sold (the 13-26) and in-line with the big cogs on the short lived 13-30 and 13-32 Record Offroad cassettes Such bigger cassettes would mean loosing your 16 cog (13-26) and two tooth jumps starting at the 14 cog for the bigger cassettes.

24x23 is like 39x37.

In theory you could find one of the old mountain bike cassettes, although it'd be a valuable collectors item and you'd spend less converting to a triple crank.

Here's a used Record Offroad 12-28 which sold in June 2013 for $147.50:

It can, but the 1997 9 cog index cam was discontinued a long time ago and you'd need to cannibalize a broken lever. I upgraded my 1996 Chorus levers for 9 speed use.

If you really want you can do some filing and retrofit second generation internals to the old levers. Here are the first generation "10 speed" levers Jan Ullrich's brother made for him which he raced through the 2003 season:

https://www.campafreak.com/shifting_t...er/page43.html

Also, you may need new wheels if you want to upgrade to 11-speed. Some 8-speed stuff has a different spline pattern on the freehub.
You can swap freehubs (I put Record Titanium 9 cog units on a pair of 1996 Chorus hubs), although parts were discontinued a long time ago and you'd probably need to cannibalize a 10mm steel axle cup and cone hub selling the left over as an 8 speed part.

Officially 11 cog cassettes take their own lock ring which has the newer 27mm 9/10 speed (not to be confused with the 28mm 8 speed setup) thread and won't screw into an older 26mm hub although people seem to do OK.

I remain curious as to what the differences are between 9/10 and 11 speed lock rings (I've only advanced to 10 cogs).
