    probably a dumb question

I picked up a Giant defy 5 last fall, its a 2013 and has about 400 or so miles on it. ok 500. Still not alot, but I have been riding more and more when i get time and feel like i want a better looking bike; this bike is fine and fits my lack of experience etc, i just hate the color scheme. grey and blue es no muy bien. So i started looking around at upgrading and it occurred to me I could just swap to a different frame. Can I just swap over to a defy3 or better frame set and use my existing controls etc? better yet is there somewhere I can look for compatibility info or do i just assume all these parts from the same manufacturer are compatible with each other?

my LBS out right told me they would be screwing me if I traded in towards a newer better bike and to just sell it myself. Looking over my options now, something in black arouses my interest. Thanks!

Your best bet is probably to sell and buy the bike you actually want to ride. There's no reason that you shouldn't be able to swap your parts to another frame, particularly another Defy (Unless something's changed recently, all aluminum Defy frames are the same save for color schemes), just understand ahead of time that it will cost a pretty penny if you have the LBS do the frame swap (on the order of $100-200) on top of whatever you pay for the frame.

You can either A) Just accept the color for now or B) get a new bike. But if you hate the color now and don't enjoy riding because of it, then a new bike will make you want to ride more. Selling a bike by yourself will most likely get you more money, but it can also be complicated. I got a far better deal trading in my bike than I would have ever gotten selling it myself. For the components your bike has, I don't think its worth the cost of removing the parts and swapping it over to a new frame. I might even say it'll be more expensive considering you won't get much for the frame itself. Buying a new bike (if your budget allows) might be your best bet.

Well I bought a New Bike last year, Just for The Good Looks.

Now I don't want to ride it much as it will get banged up.

So now, I am still riding the ugly color bike with 40,000 mi on it.

This is a strange and beautiful dynamic. More often the purty bike gets left at home in favor of the bike that just won't go out of tune no matter how many miles I put on it.

I think you could probably have your frame custom painted for less than you'd give up getting a new frame and having the components moved over.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a bike just for its looks if I already had a good one.
    Don't believe everything you think.

yes i realize this sounds ******** but I hate the color scheme on it. Ishould have just sprung the extra 200 or 300$ and stepped up to the defy3 instead, it came in black with carbon forks. not that I would have probably even noticed the difference in fork materials, but they just look so much sharper.

If you get a Defy 3 - you will soon want a TCR, or other. I say sell the Defy and get some cool looking full carbon bike that behaves like a thorough bred horse.

The Defy I have sits around these days. I use it when I ride in crap weather. Wasn't too long before I outgrew it and went to a Tarmac carbon.
