Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Factor Power Measurement Cranks

I saw this, did a search on the forum and didn't find a thread, so figured I would start one since there seems to be a lot of power measurement device discussions lately.

These/this looks interesting:

Cool looking crank. Cool looking, but slow, website. What's the price and how does one buy it. They make no mention of dealers or a future release date. Just more vaporware, I guess...

I was looking at this the other day - my understanding is that this is an option when buying complete bike, but not available separately at this time.

Standard ANT+ rate, and it beats the 1Hz rate from just about every non-SRM power meter out there.

You sure you know what a Hz is? It's not the same as samples per second.

From the bikeradar article...

The Factor Power Crank can communicate in both ANT and ANT+. The latter allows compatibility with Garmin computers, but the 4hz (four times per second) rate of data transmission can be limiting.

And yes, I am being pedantic.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hertz

The hertz (symbol Hz) is the unit of frequency in the International System of Units (SI). It is defined as the number of cycles per second of a periodic phenomenon
A "periodic phenomenon". Say, like sending 4 samples a second? Or maybe even just one sample per second?

If you're going to be pedantic, it's best not to be wrong.

Woah. "The Factor Power Crank is going to be made available separately, costing £2,000 when it goes on sale in August." That's ~$3000.

Correct. The data rate is not the sample rate. But we could go back and forth ad infinitum and this thread would be ruined so I will apologize now for derailing over silliness in the spec sheet.

What? Someone deliberately avoiding a derailed thread in the road forum?

Isn't that grounds for the ban hammer?

What does it have over an SRM, then?

Looks like they are pushing the ability to get really geeky with your pedal stroke, same kind of stuff the Vector people have been talking about. Left vs. right power, plotting the force vs. crank angle, looking at back foot down pressure.

Conventional wisdom, I believe, doesn't put a lot of value in this stuff, though.

The newer Quarqs give right/left balance data. I don't see a whole lot of value in it. I've talked to a couple of CTS coaches, including Carmichael, and they basically said unless it's grossly out of wack don't worry about it.

I think the added data on force versus crank angle etc., would be of even less value.
