Give me your thoughts on these wheels. Pics inside

These pics are from new HED Stinger wheels I just received. I have another set that also came. That other set is clean, it doesn't contain any of these stickers, markings or blemishes. I have a strong feeling that these are factory seconds. Thoughts?

The marked up set also has the following freehub body. The other set has a silver and black one which says it is 11 compatible. This one doesn't. I am guessing that means it isn't, right?

These also did not arrive with the spacers that the "clean" set came with.

(Yes I just received multiple sets, ordering mishap, not recent lottery win.)

Hell, I actually hadn't thought of that. Thanks.

I ordered (and paid for) extras by accident. I would like to keep these, but I'm uncertain about them given the stark differences. I reached out to the retailer to see what they say, then I'll try HED.

Those are standard factory QA stickers, etc. Normal. If the other set doesn't have them then you have 2 different rim sets/ models

The stickers are from the rim OEM factory. HED does not own a rim factory. Theirs are made for them just like the rest of us. Those look like Gigantex markings. 100% normal. Not "factory seconds". There is no such thing. This is carbon rims not clothing.

I like the silver smiley faced one in the last rim picture. That rim is from Gigantex. That smiley is from the builder at HED.

That's what had me really curious. The fact that one set was festooned with stickers and what looked like plugged holes, and that the other was completely clean save some silver writing. If you look at the first two pics, it looks like a hole was filled in and then someone checked the work and put a QC sticker there to verify. You think that's it?

What the hell do I know. For all I know they have some that come out right and go straight into the box and on to REI and competitive cyclist's main site, and some that need some TLC and go to nashbar or onto backcountry.

    Makes me like them more.

BTW, did I see your wheels under Wayne Simon in the most recent issue of Velo? Nice!

Yup. I've sponsored wheels under Wayne for something like 3 or 4 years now.

See, and that is where you lose me. If there is some structural issue with the holes being filled, or there is something about there wheels that have been found wanting, why would I (a) risk my bones by trying to ride them, (b) go through the gluing process only to figure out that they are busted or (c) pay good money for something not worth the price?

By asking the question here I make an effort to utilize the expertise of some individuals to help mitigate some of this risk.

...by the way, those organizations, to the extent we exist, don't have the power you think we have.
