Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ultgegra CS-6700 11-28 cogs with Dura Ace 6600 rear deraileur combo

I have a 10 speed Dura Ace 6600 grouppo on my bike with SRAM PC-1070 12-27 cassette. I've been happy with the combo but lately I've been considering replacing the cassette with an Ultegra CS-6700 11-28 to get the extra tooth on the largest cog. Will the 6600 rear derailleur work with a 28 cog? Is anyone here using this combo? I'd love to hear some feedback. Thanks!

Shimano says the maximum cog size that can be handled by the 6600 rear derailleur is 27t. That said, some have successfully used 28t cogs, and some, using unorthodox contortions of their b-screws and chain lengths, have even pushed them to 30t. How well any of this works depends on the bike, specifically the distance between the rear axle and the mounting hole for the derailleur.

I routinely run an 11-28 with a DA 7800 RD with no problems, at least not when everything is adjusted properly. When things get even just a little bit out-of-whack, though, I will have trouble getting the chain onto the 28 when I'm on the small chainring.

FYI - 6600 would be an Ultegra RD.

Yes, it would--10-speed with the external shift cables. Perhaps you guys who have successfully pushed your RD cog capacity could mention the bike you did it on. That way we could get an info base going for everyone who's thinking about doing it so they're not shooting arrows in the dark.

I really doubt you'd have to adjust anything going from a 27 to a 28t low gear. I've never heard of anyone having a problem with 11/12-28 cassettes on short cage Shimano derailleurs.

11-28 works fine with 6600, which as correctly pointed out above is Ultegra.
