Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic/vacation pictures.

The ride was fun. It was irritating getting stuck behind slow people/pacelines. I was hauling ass whenever I got irritated. Dropped the hammer and was cruising at 26-28 mph at points passing pacelines. My friend would hop on pacelines to catch up to me.
So all in all, I'm faster on flats than my friend, but he punishes me on climbs that are > 4% grade (I weigh 195, he weighs 155). Next time I do StP I'll do it in one day to avoid slow people.

Here are some pictures from the ride/vacation.

    Oregon is very scenic.

    Read the sign.

Start line. We started at 7 A.M. first riders started at 4:45 A.M.

Big rooster. That's right, I took the high road...

I rode 213 miles and all I got was this. Not even a free t-shirt.

We got picked for the front of the line to cross the Lewis and Clark bridge

Nasty climb when you're tired. My friend left me in the dust. He's 150 lbs. I only got passed by one person and was third up the bridge.

    Tanlines of peace.

During a paceline my friend was following too close behind. The paceline slowed and he didn't react quickly enough. His front wheel hit my right seatstay and he flew over his handlebars into
the side of the road. Luckily he landed on the soft dirt and only had a minor bruise on his hand. This was on mile 66. No damage on his bike.

    My right seatstay. Poor carbon.

I rode 166 miles with it like this. It's definitely softer than the left seatstay. I'm taking it to the local carbon fiber guy to see how much it will be to repair.

    Portland's food carts.

I would definitely recommend the ride. It was well-supported and fun! I only heard of one bad accident where someone crashed and broke his clavicle.

You decided to join an organized ride with a bazillion of other riders and you complained about some of them being slow? Next time you should sign up for a race instead. That should solve the problem. Nice pics BTW.

Glad you enjoyed the ride. Starting that late, you will always get stuck behind slower riders.

We had a line break down right about where you did. My friend slid into road and a truck ran over his ankle. We did one day, and still had a lot of slower riders to pass.

It really is a great ride if you take it for what it is. 10,000 riders packed on to somewhat sketchy roads, lots of beginners, eratic pacelines, beautiful scenery, interesting characters, and a mostly nice relaxed atmosphere. I prefer the more serious rides, but this one definitely has it's place.

And this is why I'll probably never do STP again. It is quite the clusterf*** of people who are learning how to ride in a paceline. Even when I did it in a day, there were plenty of fast riders who had no idea how to ride in a group, or had any sense of group etiquette. I'd hate to see how it was further back with the 2 day riders. Glad you guys made it out okay

I know, I know. It wasn't a race, but when you're stuck behind someone going 10 mph and nowhere to go it's irritating. It cleared up later in the ride. Or when people hit a "hill" and slow to a crawl.

The one day is definitely better, especially if you can get to the start line for the 4:45AM wave of riders. You'll be with generally faster and more skilled group of people, but there are always a few who do stupid sh*t. Where you really run into the slow people with the one day is on US 30--a lot of the folks who sprinted their way through the first half find out they've burned all their matches there. But by then there's lots of room to pass people, and pass them, and pass them, and...

If you are thinking of riding a paceline, get a team and leave early. All one day riders are usually gone by 5:15. Otherwise...you are working through, oh, about 7500 cyclists, plus cars, trucks, intersections, lights, food stops, etc. & it's not a race.

I thought the friendship ended after the seatstay picture...because mine would've ended right there.

Love it! I had the same helmet in white before, but it cracked due to various mtb falls over the years. I enjoyed the ride.

Great pictures! I did it in two days this year again. I plan to do it in one day next year. The best way to approach the STP is with the understanding that it is most definitely NOT a race and you will get stuck in a slow crowd occasionally. Just deal with it. It is all about the journey, not the destination or how fast you get there.

I missed this thread the first time around. Thanks for the photos and the narrative.
And the repair looks great! (I think there's also a guy out in Spring Valley that does excellent carbon fiber repair work).
