Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That was Close!

I ordered a new wheelset from the LBS and eagerly went home to swap the cassette from the old wheel to the new one. I opened the quick release on the rear wheel and popped it off, but as the wheel dropped out the whole rear derailleur came off with it! Upon closer inspection i discovered that the chainring bolt that holds the derailleur on the hanger was gone. Im really glad the derailleur didn't fall off while riding! I will be checking that bolt from now on.

On a related note does anyone know (or know how to find out) what size chainring nut i need to reattach the derailleur to the hanger? When i put the new bolt on should i use loctite?

Sounds like you need to make another trip to your LBS. They will have the correct size bolt and will know how to attach it properly.

Wow that went downhill real quick to attacking my competency. Im pretty sure the bolt/nut whatever you want to call it that attaches the rear derailleur hanger to the bike frame is called a chainring nut.

Or am i mistaken?

Your correct, in that the bolt is the same type as used for chainrings; the confusion could come that you described it as bolt for the derailleur, which it isn't; it bolts on the replaceable hanger, which the derailleur mounts (bolts) onto. The derailleur bolt (which mount to the hanger/frame) has a retaining c-clip to prevent loss.

It is correctly referred to as a "baby bike bolt".

They are sometimes stollen.

haha threads like this are the reason a person I work with doesn't come to these forums anymore... don't take it personally, OP and have a thick skin and laugh it off. Sarcasm and subtle jabs are the hallmark of the INTJ personality type.

That looks like a threaded insert to me. Sometimes those are used to replace stripped threads, sometimes they are installed in materials that don't support tapped threads. From your picture, it looks more like the former to me. The insert may have come out because it was installed by the same person who stripped the threads in the first place.

I dont think its a threaded insert that same nut/bolt whatever it is, is the same one on both of my bike frames. The bolt on the bike that fell out was installed by the bike manufacturer.

Ill ask the LBS and see if we can get it figured out.

i just want to get back on the road!

From the way the attachment hold barely overlaps the axle marks it sure looks like the threads on the drop out had been stripped at some point and a chain ring bolt used in its' place...actually quite clever.
I don't remember ever seeing that method of holding a derailleur as standard on any frame...typically it was just a threaded area of the drop out and they could become stripped.
Reinstall the bolt, use some loctite and check periodically.

That is not a fix for stripped threads, it is a pretty standard means of holding the derailleur hanger to the frame. Going from memory, they are a size larger than a chainring bolt, and much shorter. If you can't find one, I believe they come supplied with all of the Nashbar standard derailleur hangers, for like $6.

I thought the assembly that held the RD to the dropout was called a bracket spindle and the bolt that looks like a chainring bolt was called a hanger bolt???. At least as it is referred to in the Shimano manuals...Campagnolo just calls it "Screw A". Plus, that's also an odd place to hang an RD. How old is the bike?

The derailleur should mount to the hanger, which is just out of view below the bottom right of your picture. Is it broken off, so someone drilled a hole and put in the threaded insert instead ?

If so, doesnt the QR skewer get in the way ?

Here it is from the front:

The entire derailleur hanger is what fell off the bike, apparently the front side of the hanger bolt (whatever it is) worked itself lose. This is the same type of bolt that is on my 2012 Kestrel derailleur hanger also

Yup, you need a derailleur hanger bolt. And probably a Bianchi breakaway derailleur hanger #49 . The set should come with its own retaining bolt.
