Crankset For Best Ankle Clearance

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Crankset For Best Ankle Clearance

Hi!

I bought a Variado 3.0 last year. It has triple tiagra crankset. My problem is my ankles are rubbing against crank arm. I adjusted the cleats for max. clearance but my knees didn' t like it. I have the right arch support so shoe isn' t the problem. I think only way to solve this problem is buying a new crankset. I search for options but didn' t find much. For a price range I can' t buy more expensive than 105. Other question is can I put another crank arm to existing tiagra set. Someone is selling ULTEGRA FC-M6500 crank arm here. Looks like it has good clearance. Can it be fit into tiagra crankset?

Hope you can help.
Thanks.

It seems like you need to get longer pedals.

No. Longer pedals or adjusting cleats don' t work because my knees don' t like wider q factor.

Thanks.

Try lowering your seat by 3mm and see if it works for you. It's possible that your seat is too high and it is pulling your legs to where the ankle is not comfortable.

If you want to switch cranks, I think to get a narrower Q-factor, you need to go to a double. Given your price range, I would try to find a SRAM Rival compact.

Pedal to crank arm clearance is set by pedals, not the crankset. Your only option is pedal extenders. If you're having this issue with your knees in proper alignment, that indicates that you have extremely wide ankles or a really huge swing angle.

Given the overall weirdness of the whole situation, it seems like talking to a fitter is highly recommended in this case.

Problem is there isn' t any fitter in my area. People adjust their saddle with "heel technique" and just ride. When I said rubbing, I mean this. Bumpy area that I marked is my problem.

SRAM BB30 cranks have the most clearance in that area that I've seen. The crank arm bends inward at the spindle is only sticks out a few mm beyond the plane of the large ring. This point is wider on cranks for wider BBs.

That is exactly what I need. Unfortunately my frame isn' t BB30. I don' t need that much clearance at all. It is perfect. Even in worst situation it looks better than my tiagra crank. Do SRAM' s cranks for other bikes (GXP I guess?) have clearance like that?

Thanks.
