Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Dilemma…I won a choice of two groupsets..

So..I entered a contest to pick the winners of the TDF stages through a local bike shop and I have my choice of 2013 Ultegra Di2 and 2013 Sram Red. I really can't decide which one is best for me. I currently run Sram Red from about 4 years ago and love it but it is getting a bit old…hmm..what to do?

di2 is the better group if you want to not worry about shifting.

red is lighter and looks cooler and it's easier to run a big cassette with red.

also if you don't have a di2 ready frame it's more of a pita to install the di2

This might swing it. Since it's your LBS, talk to them about the install. If they're happy to put the Di2 on your bike, and you're happy to plug your bike in every 6 months, that might be the way to go.

If your frame isn't equipped for electronic, then take the new Red. You know it works, you're obviously comfortable with it.

I have the 2012 Red and I don't worry about shifting at all. I love the chance to try the new 2013 with hydro brakes, except the new Red only comes in Red 22, 11 speed. That's a deal killer for me.

Not a fan of the 22? Do share your thoughts. I'm curious. I've only known of its advantages. Why is it a deal killer for you?

Not sure in his case, but if you have a bunch of expensive 10-speed wheels, that could make it more expensive or frustrating.

It boggles the mind how shifting is now a 'worry.' Not picking on you, aramis, you are by no means alone expressing this sentiment - too many recent threads to count about electronic shifting.

BTW, I spent quite a bit of time in Santa Cruz in the 70's and 80's and heading back in a month. Used to ride highway 9 from Ben Lomond to Santa Cruz without a helmet and am happy to be alive.

OP, I say stay with what you know.

No doubt. Feels like a troll post, but just sell either. Buy two nice Craigslist bikes. Build the stable.

I hear you about the shifting. Once I got quality stuff (good SunTour, Shimano or when I rarely had the money, Campy) shifting, even friction shifting back in the day, wasn't "a worry."

Having said that, if I could try Di2 for free I think that's the way I would go. It is actually something new. All of the caveats about compatibility need to be sorted out but if it could be made to work... Why not?

Lucky so and so

Also, you need to change the quote over your avatar. You definitely got something. The envy of the 41 if nothing else.

Spoken tongue in cheek not as a mod.
