Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How manytimes do you wear shorts/bib before washing?

Is the best way to test for cleanliness the sniff test?
I fear the use of my washing machine. I have ruined more shorts/shirts than I can count. My wife tosses everything in the washer then the dryer and BAM! they no longer fit.
I have tried to educate her and even used Lysol spray as a anti-bacterial ceaner to avoid the washer and even wore stuff into the shower.
Thus I ask how to keep stuff clean but not ruin....

Once. I wash all of my kit after each ride no matter how far I ride or the weather. I sweat like a ho in church and can't stand the thought of wearing sweaty kit.

One (although once every couple of years I'll go for two, just to see if it kills me.)
Nope. Washing is the best test.
I wash mine in sink right away if at all possible.

Once.

Machine wash cold, gentle. Hang dry. Don't blame your machine for your improper use.

Some times I can get away with two short simi sweaty rides - But then again I use thin cotton liners...

Rinsing in the sink or shower after a ride is a great idea...

For machine its a light individual load at the highest water level setting and two rinses then hang dry...

NO DRIER EVER...

I am one of those guys that wears the big size stuff so replacing a set of shorts is not cheap...

One time, no exceptions*. Sometimes that's just soaping and rinsing in the shower, but it must be cleaned somehow.

No, the sniff test does not always work. As soon as you warm up and start perspiring the bacteria (and their waste products) that's been collecting there rear their ugly heads.

*if I commute in them I don't wash it before going home, so I guess that is an exception.

After every use . . .unless you eventually want to get saddle sores. If you've never had them, count yourself lucky. Wash on gentle cycle and hang to dry. Easy system. Don't let your wife do your cycle laundry.

I hand wash my cycling clothes after every ride.
2-3 times I couldn't do it. Nothing happened, anyway.

Just the once. Twice (morning and afternoon) if I am commuting since the rides are short and I don't sweat that much in the morning (the trick not smelling up your cloths on a short morning commute is to take a shower before you ride).

I wash my cycling cloths with the washer with cold wash/rinse on a gentle setting and dry in the dryer on low heat.

When I was just starting and had only 1 bib and 2 jerseys, I'd try to get multiple wears... but I'd at least wear it into the shower for some suds and a good rinse.

Yup, I also put all my stuff in a washable net bag, not the regular hamper. That way I either wash them by themselves or throw the whole bag (closed) in with a small partial load of colors that are going gentle. Then I just have to pull the one bag out and hang the contents on the rack rather than sorting through all the laundry piece by piece to find the stuff that can't go in the dryer.

^^^ This. There is no reason shorts and jerseys can't withstand regular washer and dryer settings and still last for years. I have never babied my kits, and never had a laundry related failure. Reusing shorts without washing is disgusting.

Once.

I recently started using chamois crème, so now I definitely have a need to wash my shorts after every ride.

Easy question, easy answer: ONE TIME. If your stuff is going to get ruined, every second or third wash will do it too. If necessary, just wash by hand in the sink (or shower) and hang up to dry. Either way is better than crotch rot or saddle sores.

Every ride. I learned this lesson the hard way many years ago when I re used a pair of sweaty shorts (because I had nothing else) and ended up with a nasty rash that required prescription medication to clear up. To be clear the sweaty shorts I used had been sitting damp in my laundry bag for a couple of days providing an ideal damp, warm , dark environment for bacterial growth.

Not sure why everyone treats there cycling apparel like it's their Sunday best. I machine wash all my cycling clothes in warm water / normal cycle and throw it in the dryer on normal heat which is medium high. If the clothing can't hold up to normal use including machine wash and dry I don't want it. For the record I have washed Assos, Rapha, Giordana and Castelli clothing this way countless times and never had a problem. White vinegar and baking soda (not necessarily in combination) work well for eliminating odors.
