Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I will say when I read the thread title but before I read the text I was getting pretty excited about some new research showing that people are abandoning the sport in droves and we wouldn't have to worry about the proverbial tri-geek anymore...no such luck.

If it's not obvious I'm just kidding. All the triathletes I've known have been pretty cool people and very strong cyclists.

You're totally failing at this game of hide and seek. Poor guy is still hiding and instead of seeking, you're on the internet.

I was born in Taiwan and I know about these kind of things. It was a water ghost. You're lucky that he didn't take you with him.

Either a) he was riding X miles, hit the 1/2 X point and turned around

or b) he passed you and you can't deal with it so you keep looking over your shoulder instead of ahead of you.

You clearly used your massive guads to dial it up to 400 watts and then you droped the hamer on him. He is now at home curled in a corner and weeping. You crushed his soul.

He was on my wheel when he vanished.

I think now he must of either turned around or was indeed hiding from embarrassment.

If he did turn around it must have been at the exact moment I pulled through. He would have had to have stopped almost immediately, ridden to the far side of the road, gotten off his bike, lifted it over the concrete meridian climbed back on and dialed it up 400W going the other way for me to not be able to see him at all.

If this was the case it is still pretty weird, non?

Strong post for a newb. Could you be a sock puppet?

Anyway, I favor this theory as well. It will make his Strava upload look weird.

There was nowhere he could stop to pee that I wouldn't have been able to see him. And why suddenly stop there when there is a popular beach with facilities clearly marked just up ahead.

At this point I am leaning towards alien abduction.

anterior anal probing is the worst. face-to-face just shames the patient...now, side-by-side aint so bad.

Bob, it should be obvious what happened.

He was riding in a blind spot when you turned to look behind you. The change in air noise masked his shifting, and he attacked. By the time your rickety sack of skin and bone mustered the motor units to look ahead, he was long gone. No amount of compression socks or tt helmets could have helped you.

Alien abduction is more plausible.

It was the ghost of an athlete who passed away, feeling like he did not achieve the things he wanted to achieve in his sport. Now his soul is restless, forever training and pushing himself for a goal he no longer can achieve.

That or he turned around or got a flat.

If you were just riding at a leisurely pace and he was going flat out and still couldn't catch you then maybe he just imploded through a sense of terminal embarrassment that he'd spent all that money on a TT bike when he might as well have had one like yours and saved his cash. Maybe he stopped to trade his cycling kit for a Hawaiian shirt and some flip flops.
