Friend dialed it to 400 watts and broke Trek rear triangle

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What?

Nachoman - carlos with a C recently got his carbon Felt repaired somewhere in North County I think, seemed very happy with the results.

I wasn't party to that conversation (and frankly I"m getting it third hand since he had his LBS deal directly with Trek), so I really don't know those details.
But what I do know is that on the day of the incident he certainly was not involved in a crash.
While I didn't see the incident (because I was in front of him) I shortly circled back and heard the whole story.

He did submit some photos to a place in Escondido that does carbon fiber repair, which is probably the same place you're referring to.

Apparently for some reason they said it coudln't be repaired.

Is the bike under warranty and I assume just general riding if so they would replace or pro-rate it? I have to say to me that is a badge of honor to smash it out that hard to literally snap the frame!

They denied the warranty but offered him a discount on a new Madone frame. He took them up on their offer.
I think he said he got a new, mid-range, Madone frame for about $1,500.00. I forgot the exact amount he paid and I"m not familiar enough with the Madone frames to even know the differences between them.

What happened to being self sufficient? If the dude had been carrying a spare frame, he would have been good to go.

Aw, that blows. Well, it makes me feel better about buying used frames all the time (er, ok, twice). if they break, they break.

The other guy, we stuffed his bike in the back of my car and gave him a ride home. (photo below).

I would expect a crack anywhere else but where the big crack is, perhaps another frame member that is now carrying a larger load than was intended. If in fact there are two cracks, something is not adding up here.....

Sounds like a job for the legal system and I don't mean small claims court. Denying a warranty claim for a phony, made up reason like we know it couldn't have happened that way is BS. He just got bullied. I would not have taken the discount deal but would have a lawyer on the phone with them pronto. That is not my style, but you can't let a company get away with s**t like that. All he has to do is allude to some orthopedic issues and he is golden. Trek will be dying to settle with him. I hear they do this stuff a lot. A$$hats.

Well..... I can't get very thrilled about Trek denying that claim. And sheee-it.... if you can really mess up a carbon frame so that it asplodes like THAT, yet shows no obvious signs of crashing, that just gives me the willies on carbon frames. Especially Trek frames.

Absent any obvious crash damage, that should be warranteed. Trek deserves any bad pub they get from this one.

My nine month old Roubaix SL2 frame is cracked internally (or so says my LBS). Never dropped or crashed and pretty much babied since new. It creaks any time I pedal so I'm glad Specialized is taking their sweet time on the warranty claim...

All of this, especially the crash damage. On that basis Trek can just say "oh you crashed that" every single time a frame breaks. "My bb snapped," "oh you crashed that," "my fork did the splits in a pothole," "oh you crashed that," "my saddle fell off as I was rolling out of the showroom," "oh you crashed that, and we're gonna sue you if you say anything bad about our customer service to any of your friends."

That frame can easily be repaired by Calfee or a similar company.

Hey, they came through for me just fine when the bottom bracket shell broke free inside my frame. Mid-tube breaks are always going to be suspect. The chance of this being a manufacturing defect is very small, and manufacturing defects are what the warranty covers.
