Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Funny thing happened to me on the way to work

I ran over a rattle snake that broke out a spoke and warped my rear wheel stopping me from getting to work. I am pretty sure the snake was dead. The good thing is the LBS trued my wheel and replace the spoke for 10 bucks.

I worry about this sort of incident alot around here. Especially when riding off road where them snakes could be hiding in the brush at the edge of the trail. I'd be cleaning my shorts by now if it happened to me.

There was a dead rattlesnake in the middle of the lane on a group ride I was on last year. I did the proper thing and passed in the left hand lane making sure to give several car lengths clearance on both sides of it before I merged. Not a fan.

Sort of related but I stepped on one while hiking a few weeks ago. It took off like a shot in down the side of the mountain before I knew what happened. Luckily it didn't bite bit that sure woke me up.

I almost hit a 4" millipede yesterday. Fortunately I was able to swerve and miss it.

I was on an isolated country road a few hours ago. I saw a hawk giving me the stink eye. I told it to eff off. It felt good.

I once almost ran over a rattle snake that was crossing the road. Was able to stop in time, then played traffic cop to stop vehicles (luckily it was a one way street) so that it could make it across.

Am I wrong in thinking that going over a snake shouldn't have caused a spoke to break?
