Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You are right Stan. That is why mine was carried by steam boat and personally delivered to me by a beautiful Italian model who, as she handed me the bike (lovingly hand made by Italian artisans) whispered sweet nothings into my ears.

Some things in life are worth their weight in gold.

Carry on my friend.

That's almost how I got my bike except that I had to drive to Spring Valley to pick it up, then instead of it being delivered to me by a beautiful Italian model, it was given to me by Bill Holland, a sixty year old man, then instead of whispering sweet nothings into my ears, which I would not have appreciated, he handed me the bill.

The doctor who performed my Lasik eye surgery has a custom-made Holland bike. He loves it. He likes the follow-up from Bill. Those are great bikes and the customer service, especially if you live in So. Cal. can't be beat.

I ride a $900 bike and I get the opposite reaction because I live in abject poverty. I just don't have to scratch to go drop $10,000 on a bicycle. This is why I almost exclusively pedal alone.

The two ammo panics in the last decade, and the wars, have driven prices through the ROOF even on reloading components. Combined with a severe brain concussion/contusion that shut my rifle shooting down starting in winter 2012 forward, it was time to find a new hobby.

Complete digression here, but I got knocked out of my body by my head injury. I was very fundamentally confused and unsure about whether I was even me. Very suspicious on some level. Hard to explain unless you've been there. Anyway, highly-aerobic activities have REALLY helped ground me again, as well as helping immeasurably with the anxiety and depression I was battling post injury.

I guess suffering in a body, IE mashing up an endless hill or whatever, is convincing proof that one is actually living in a body!

Combined withlosing over 20 lbs so far this summer.... 20 more and I'll be SKINNY again.... I'm hooked. Whatever the costs are, is almost irrelevant. It's just SO net-positive for me.
I love guns and target shooting. Not a hunter but will bear down on the prairie dogs. Took up cycling because my wife is an exercise/runner nut and I can't stand running but I really like cycling. we started 60 - 100 mile rides this year and I love it. I'm in better shape now than 20 or 30 years ago and I'm 60 now. I just wish .22LR ammo was more plentiful. Cycling isn't expensive, it's the motels and gas you need when you go out of town.

add competing for the America's Cup with a carbon-fiber hydrofoil Catamaran to that list of relative costs..

by the way Chamois* is a goat, their skin has long been used the leather tanned
for moisture absorption, for a long time .
I had a pair of those chamois leather lined wool cycle shorts in the 70's.
washing, and treating the sitz-pad after washing to soften up again, is not missed..

you can still buy the stuff for washing your car windows.

The above statement saying they're not using this, would involve looking in those guys shorts ,
I doubt that, personal inspection, was done.

yeah, i heard a mast broke in a pre-qualifying race and it cost over 20 or 30K to replace. That's expensive.

I think the picture is before the 50's. First, it had to be before they allowed outside support, given that the riders are carrying their own spares. Second, I don't think the bikes have derailleurs. Third, J.B. Louvet was a team at least as far back as the teens and 20's.

This picture of Bottechia in 1923 looks pretty similar.

By the 40's and 50's things were looking a bit more modern:

According to an image search it's cited as being in or about 1920.

I've been trying to convince myself to buy a respectable bike for the last few months. However, I can't bring myself to replace my $900 bike equipped with Shimano "everything" for a "better" $3500 bike equipped with an FSA crank, Tektro brakes, and 2000g wheels.

hard to measure the stuff you experienced from cycling or any hobby. But decent road bikes are really expensive..much more expensive than most other sports..

I would suggest looking at a different $3500 bike.

I`m not into fishing but I found this---

All that money to catch something that £ $ 5 rod could do

What about motorsports? I'm a recovering track junkie, there's nothing that I have squandered away so much cash on besides that. A normal weekend with registration fees, gas, hotel, beer, steak, beer and consumable parts ate up (brakes, tires, etc), generally you're looking at $800-1k for a weekend... Then multiply times 8-12 events a year.

However that hobby is what makes me want a fast bike, couldn't afford a 458, but a high end bike is still reasonable in comparison. The health benefits and social aspect of the sport are great. I'm glad to be bit by the bug.
