riding partner gave up his specialized propero to get a lazer helmet, far less mushroom looking than the spesh lid is.

Well you and your wife will get over it after a while. I've been riding since I was a little kid and has always worn a helmet so I don't see why it looks "bad/stupid/dorky". But apparently there are some people out there who are new riders that think it makes them look "really stupid". Kudos for wearing one though.

My Schwinn helmet I bought from Target many years back looks horrendously mushroomy.
My Giro Atmos, which I bought just several months ago, looks somewhat mushroomy on me.
A Kask K.50 I tried on (unfortunately, after I bought the Giro) looked very slim.
Personally, I'll go for a Kask K.50 or Mojito for my next helmet. I'm also interested to see what effect the Catlike has on my head. I've seen Catlike Whispers look slim on other non-pros. Specialized doesn't fit my head at all.

Most BELL helmets are shroom like shape.
If you wanted to a low profile helmets.. check "Giro" or "Bontrager Circuit / Specter" helmets.

I'd wear a styrofoam beer cooler on my head if I thought it would help my noggin survive a crash. They all make your head look big.

Hahaha...some of these responses are making me laugh which is good, because it's definitely a goofy topic.
The helmet I have now is a Bell Ghisallo (had to look up the model). It's a fine helmet I'm sure, fits well, plenty comfortable...but goodness does it look funny. I chuckle whenever I catch a glimpse of myself!

Cycling kits are ludicrous but they have evolved over 150 years to the point they're at now. Also, every sport's gear looks ridiculous out of context:
Baseball players wear baggy pajamas and spats.
Football players are in jodhpurs, crash helmets and cartoonishly oversized Gwar-ish shoulder pads.
Hockey players wear "Lets Get Physical"-style knit leggings, Sponge-Bob Squarepants padded shorts with suspenders and garish sweaters.
Swimmers are in Speedos and bald caps.
Basketball players are in Italian grandpa a-frame shirts that are too big for them, Bermuda shorts that are too big for them and pneumatic-looking hiking boot derivatives.
...etc

lazer genesis: the least mushroomy of the brand's offerings...
the O2 didn't exactly fit my head shape and the high end Helium was double mushroomy due to the dual density foam they use.
