Lemond is back
Am I missing a previous post of this or has the 41 lost a step? https://www.velonation.com/News/ID/15...-for-2014.aspx

Yeah, if I'm dodging coffins, I wanna do it on one of those! Lemond is definitely one of the greatest American cyclists of all time, and I'd be proud to support his legacy and current efforts by buying another Lemond bike, but dang, $7.5k for a Chorus bike? LTD edition...I get it, but what will production pricing look like?

I have a hard time getting excited for new road bike frames.
I mean, I'd like to have a nicer one, sure, but the advancement of road frames (compared to tri frames) leaves a lot to be desired.

IIRC when Trek owned Lemond they made some pretty original bikes - some Ti/Carbon hybrids if I remember. Sadly these don't look nearly as innovative.

Tri frames? Why talk about **** sandwiches in a road racing thread?
Good to see Lemond back. I still feel enmity towards Trek for how he was treated. I hope he makes a go of it.
That's Joop Zoetemelk in the World Champion Stripes, that makes this 1986:

I didn't think the 41 allowed the sleeveless crowd in here.
Cheers to Lemond; I hope his bikes sell well. I loved the color schemes of his 80's bikes.

When, I think about Lemond, I think about perhaps the greatest American bike rider of all time, a man who went to Europe and beat the best riders and who raced clean. Then he was vilified and considered to be a footnote to LA's career because of LA's so called success.
What Lemond knew about himself and LA were true...and yes how he was rejected by Trek as being an irrelevant anachronism.
The bike business is competitive and highly R&D driven. Time will tell if Lemond bikes can compete in this very competitive arena. But Lemond knows just a bit about competing. I sure wish him well.
The greatest ever who wasn't considered as such because of a more epic cheater. Shot in a hunting accident which affected his overall health and really not believed for what he said which turned out to be true. Quite a story.

People seem to make the assumption that the Tour de France started out as a drug-ridden speed-fest, somehow cleaned itself all up just when Lemond came along, then went to hell in a handbasket the minute he got out of it, and I am somewhat skeptical of that idea. If circumstances had been a bit different, Armstrong would still be considered "clean" and he'd be the A-hole trash-talking the current champ for using drugs.
And I don't know that us coffin-dodgers have that much interest in yet another carbon fiber bike made overseas. Not like that hasn't been done a few million times.

PS: I do believe that LA is the greatest modern rider and the whole sport is or was dirty and he did what others did, only more successfully. I also believe LA to be perhaps the most despicable and most ruthless rider to have competed.
Just my opinion and yours maybe different.

Do you think Lemond would fair better not getting into the over populated carbon field dominated by Giant etc, instead remaining niche with steel, titanium, carbon-mix etc and filling in the US made custom bicycle void left by Serotta?

Yeah, I was kind of wondering this myself. I sort of liked the niche of the industry that his former brand filled.

One of his complaints against Trek was that they stopped innovating and let the brand languish so it's not likely he'd want to go back to what they were doing.

Personally, I believe Lemond has a steep, hard ride competing in the carbon area. But as stated before, Lemond can climb hills and ride faster than most....probably even now.
No matter what ilk of road bike he makes, its gonna be tough sledding.

To exand a bit - I would love to have a custom Lemond and pay good money for it - in the region of his current pricing. Not sure how many younger cyclists desire a Lemond frame, probably not even quite sure who he is other than an old US racer who won the Tour?
This, as opposed to the excitement many of us felt when he had his duel with Hinault, won, then later got shot in a hunting accident, returned, narrowly beat Fignon, wearing the Z team kit?
I have little interest in an overseas Lemond factory made frame with Campy thrown on it. I have a modern carbon already, a BMC and would consider Pinarello, Orbea, Giant before Lemond if I needed another.
So sure business 101, I'm trying to determine his segment for success.

That's enough of the Armstrong & doping conversation. I will NOT go through previous comments to clean up, but it's off topic. So is the tri nonsense.
This thread is about Lemond bicycles. If you can't keep the topics separate please move on to some other thread. Thanks!

No. 1. Lemond is making the wrong kind of bike for his prospective market is my guess and not just for us "coffin-dodgers."
