Need help - new fork for KHS Flite 747?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Need help - new fork for KHS Flite 747?

Hi,

I need some help - hoping someone can point me in the right direction…

Got into an accident on Monday which bent my KHS Flite 747's fork and wheel. I won't go into details as to how it happened because I'll end up really upset at work!

(Ok, was in the bike lane on the LHS and a car cut me off to turn left. Driver thought she had time to go between a few pedestrians but then slammed on the breaks as I was looking behind to see if some other idiot would do the same thing. Next thing you know, I'm laying on her trunk and my fork and wheel are bent.)

That didn't feel so bad…

Anyhow, I'm a 1st year cyclist (who is totally obsessed with the sport) but am not the most knowledgeable when it comes to swapping parts, etc. Long story short, I need a new fork but don't want to pay a fortune (spent enough this year on bike + accessories and I have 3 kids).

Any pointers as to what I should be looking for? I'm assuming something with a long steer tube since my head tube is huge? LBS vs ordering online?

My bike is made of chromoly steel and I think another steel for would work, especially since I mostly commute on our horrendous roads in Montreal. I'd like to upgrade to carbon, but at 6'7" / 240lbs and hitting potholes everyday it may not be my best option.

BUDGET: $100-$200 (is this even possible without buying plastic?)

Dreaming of the day I'll have a custom TI frame, but that's another story…

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks
BC

Why not replace it with a stock KHS fork, and bill the woman that caused the accident?

I guess I could go that route, i.e. KHS fork. I quite honestly didn't even think of that option (lol).

As for the woman who caused this, I told her to leave as she was trying to blame it on me. Would rather spend $200 on a fork than more on a new windshield and bail money...

But thanks!

My boss had a similar wreck. He put his left hand/wrist through her rear window too, but he and his bike were unharmed.

The woman tried to blame him for the wreck, but there were witnesses that saw the wreck differently than she did.

Did you get a fork? finding one with a long steerer is not easy.
I replaced my KHS747 fork with an Enve 2.0 carbon fork, not cheap but a great fork and very light.
Still have my virtually new original fork from the 747 if you are interested, let me know, I'm in BC. (you can mail me with my username at hotmail)

Just randomly curious. If you have horrible roads in Montreal, do you ride on 25 or 28mm tires?

Bike Nashbar has inexpensive steel road forks. You can't do better than that. Also carbon that is not too expensive.

Thanks, but all of these have a 300mm steerer tube; I need at least 330mm

Interesting. I looked up your frame and saw it comes only in 65 cm size. Huge. You must be what, 6" 6' or more? Have you looked into having the fork straightened by a frame builder? Are the legs bent along their length or just at the crown. Find a local frame builder to either fix your existing fork or build you a generic new one. Not free, but shouldn't be too expensive.

Thanks rpenmanparker, I'm 6'8 about 230lbs, so the 65cm is justified

I'll ask Guru as they're close-by, but I think it may be just as expensive as buying an Enve fork. Will see!

Appreciate everyone's input!

Yeah, Guru is a little upmarket for replacing your OEM fork. Are there no custom steel frame builders nearby? I hear Marinoni is easy to work with. He is in Terrebonne, QC, but may be a little too "big" now with his own line of bikes rather than just custom. Maybe you can find a frame builder nearby that is a little more reasonable by asking at your LBS. Good luck.
