Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Squeaky When Wet - Disc brakes on my road bike

This past weekend I had the opportunity to try out my Hope V-Brakes in the rain. I was all kinds of excited about using reliable hydraulic disc brakes in the rain... I'm tall and, therefore, heavier than most average-height guys. That's why I chose them. The brakes worked flawlessly, except for the horrendous squawking sound they made every time they were compressed. We pulled into sag stops making enough noise to wake the dead. I don't look for attention, but I got it. Any suggestions on how to squash the squeak, or is this a life sentence?

They take some breaking in. Assuming everything is tuned correctly, the squeal will likely dissipate over a week or two.

I have had the brakes on the bike for many miles and lots of braking, so this is not part of the "breaking-in" period. And once it stopped raining, they stopped squealing. It was shockingly loud!

The squeaks will always be there, even after breaking in. You just have to live with it.

Squeaking / noisy rotors are often a sign of contamination, either of the pads and/or rotors, this is assuming that the pads have been bedded in.

Clean the rotors with bike (not automotive) disc brake cleaner / IPA/rubbing alcohol, and that should clean up the issue, that said, some brakes like Shimano M775 would always squeal regardless of what you did with them.
