Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

These go to eleven

Nigel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and...
Martin: Oh, I see. And most bikes go up to ten?
Nigel: Exactly.
Martin: Does that mean it's faster? Is it any faster?
Nigel: Well, it's one faster, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be riding at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your bike. Where can you go from there? Where?
Martin: I don't know.
Nigel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?
Martin: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel: Eleven. Exactly. One faster.
Martin: Why don't you just make ten faster and make ten be the top number and make that a little faster?
[Pause.]
Nigel: These go to eleven.

I'll wait for 12. I don't like the number 11, unless it has to do with The Doctor.

I've decided to hold out until 13 speed. It's all a waiting game now.

I also heard from a top secret industry source that campy has already developed a 17 speed cassette in their labs.

How do you like the Ultegra 6800? Word is that it's a big step up in shift quality from 6700.

When will we get that 20t spread on a double at the front so we can pair that with a 50-30 crank?

I haven't a clue. It's been pouring buckets of rain all day so I have yet to ride. My test ride was on a 105 equipped bike (to figure out if I needed a 52 or 54 frame). Bike is currently sitting in the Kurt trainer so I can drop the bars a bit to match my old bike and then tweak the fit.

And also getting the dork disk taken off the rear wheel!

Allthough I haven't ridden 11 yet, I'm going to agree with you.
My jump from 9 to 10 was meh.
But my jump from 7 to 9 was big.

Yeah. As has been discussed here before, I like 10. From here on out more gears doesn't do much for me unless the range gets wider.

I have a CX bike with 9 speed that used to also be my road bike. When I got a road bike in 2008, it had 10 speed. If you could switch the drivetrains on those two bikes without changing the feel, I would have no idea if there were 9 or 10 cogs on the cassette.

Going to the 11 speed on the new bike had to do with hearing that the performance of the new Ultegra was a big jump up and I felt worth the price difference compared to getting a leftover 2013 model. If I ever decide to run an 11-32 cassette, then the extra cog may really come in handy; essentially the 10 speed 11-28 plus a 32 tooth cog thrown on the back.

Actually I liked your Spinal Tap reference. Can you hear the sustain?

The value of 11-sp lies in that 32 tooth big cassette cog.... I likes me some granny on the really steep stuff....
