Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You will be hard pressed to find positive comments about FSA cranks on the 41. They are equipmentata non grata here due to real or imagined front shifting issues and appearance. Nevertheless I have run several of the SLK Lights in the standard outboard threaded cup BB configuration with 24 mm diameter spindles, and I like them fine. Sorry I cannot offer any intel re: the BB30 version.

I run the SL-K Light BB30 cranks (53/39) on my CAAD10 and have nothing but good things to say about them - they perform very well and I am yet (6031Km of riding since March) to encounter any front ring shifting issues.

cheers

I've got the standard (53/39) version on my 2012 Allez E5, and they're fine, no front shifting or other issues. For that matter, I've got a compact Gossamer crankset with about 7k miles on it with no front shifting or other issues. I've even got a set of wheels built on Open Pro rims with about 10k miles on them, and they haven't 'sploded yet. I must be an outlier.

I am looking at replacing my SRAM Apex BB30 crankset because I simply don't like it. No other reason but been looking hard at this particular crankset. I have had FSA in the past too and no complaints. Wonder why people say they have issues but never can point to them????

I think most folks with FSA issues point to the lowest end, Vero and Gossamer. I ended up warping my Vero, such that it had obvious "wobulation" as I pedalled. So it shifted a tad chunky. That same crank is now installed on my brother's bike, and he likes it just fine, because he friction shifts and isn't that finicky.

I was running an FSA SL-K Light Compact until I replaced it will an FSA SL-K Light triple. They both shift fine, but my experience would not be typical since I have 10 speed Campy Chorus which isn't indexed up front.

I just had to send an SLK/Light crank back because the metal insert for the pedal threads on the right crank arm has come loose and worn the actual carbon around the hole away. It's been 2 years, so I'm not sure if it will be replaced under warranty. If they don't replace it for free, they can just keep the damn thing.

I really like my FSA SLK light. I'm now running it with Praxis Works rings so it's lighter and shifts even better than before. The original rings shifted fine, I just changed them for looks. I also have SRAM Rival and Shimano Tiagra chainsets and I would say the FSA shifts best (with Rival FD/105 chain), followed by Tiagra (with Sora FD/Dura Ace chain) then Rival (with 105 FD/KMC X10SL chain). The only issue I have is the relatively expensive FSA Mega Exo BBs I have to buy for it, but that's not relevant to BB30 version.

True. This is my first bike with a BB30 system and it is rather difficult to find a variety of cranks and BB to date for it. I have found the SL-K in 50-34 with the right size arm lengths I need and would consider it an upgrade over the SRAM Apex BB30 system that came on the bike.

My other question would be the crank comes with a new BB and sealed bearing rings...............my bike is relatively new. Would you just swap out the cranks and save the new BB and ball bearings for later on a rebuild or just replace all while I had the crank off? I tend to say if there is no issue with the one in place save the one that will come with the ne wcrank for a rebuild later.......comments????

I'd say go for it. It's a very light crank and further down the line you can add Praxis Works rings to make it even better and lighter. Your other option is to fit an adapter and use any number of other cranks.

Definitely just replace the crank and keep on using the old bearings until they give out PENDING similarity and compatibility. It has to work properly. If the bearings of the two brands are significantly different, you can't keep on using the old ones.

+1. I found an amazing deal for FSA 386EVO Gossamer crank arms on ebay. Bought another set of Praxis rings and works flawlessly with SR11-EPS.

This. My bike came stock with a FSA gossamer...replaced the rings with Praxis and all is good. So far, it rides and now shifts like a champ. No complaints as of yet.
