Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling Reports - October 24/25/26/27

It's almost a long weekend here in Tasmania ... today is a public holiday and many people are talking tomorrow off as well. So I'm starting the weekend ride thread now.
As usual ... tell us about your cycling adventures this weekend ... inside or out. If you're doing other sports, tell us about them too. Post pics if you've got them.

Thursday 24 - Royal Hobart Show Day - Rowan and I rode 24.78 km. It was a chilly and hilly ride, and then we ended it with a workout at the local outdoor gym equipment.

Saturday - 52.82 km. We did a somewhat hilly (hillier than I'm used to) and windy ride out to Seven Mile Beach and back.

That's the longest ride we've done since September 9, and I'm feeling it.

The temperature reached a high of 14C, and the wind was gusting up to 74 km/h.

Sunday - 26.5 km southeast of Hobart.

We drove to a overlook viewing area, parked there and then cycled. It was a nice route with lots of views and beaches. The temperature got to 18C and the wind was nowhere near as strong as yesterday ... only gusts up to 40 km/h today.

Short 20 mile ride this morning; I'd already been shoveling gravel and hauling it to the backyard for two hours. Went down to Ditto Landing on the Tennessee River. Small harbor with about 100 boats. Lots of people there engaging in riparian entertainments.

The river was very pretty and several cabin cruisers like this one were out and about.

15C (60F) and overcast. My new Castelli full sleeve jersey felt very nice but was a bit much for today, needed some venting in the back.

View to the East. On the left is Hobbs Island; the rowing team practices down there without being bothered by the barges and other boats.

Group ride 80 miles out and back to the lighthouse. I thought it would be clear, but foggy as common out there.

We had a tandem with a strong couple on it, pull us along at a fast clip the whole way.

Also a high schooler who started with guns blazing, but wasn't used to the distance, and didn't finish. He still had a good time 'though.

I had some minor mechanical issues, and after not riding for a week, and a couple of efforts to keep up with the tandem, I slowed a bit at the end, but overall,

a fine time was had by all.

Really nice 40 mile ride on what proved to be the coolest morning thus far (50 degs). Started off misty and after only a few hundred feet of elevation got clear of the wet. At the top of the climb, 2000', the weather was beautiful: mid 60's, bright sunshine. Set a few senior-citizen PRs on the climb which surprised the heck out of me. We're being hit with what we Californians refer to as a cold front, 60 degrees max today.

We finally got some fall like weather here in FL this weekend. Saturday and Sunday’s 40 mile rides were very lovely. The only problem was a scary buzzing I got from a driver. On one part of Sunday’s ride the road has a fairly wide outside lane. When it comes to a 4 way stop the outside lane narrows so I take the lane. However, I saw a fast moving SUV coming up. My instinct said they were going to be trouble so I stayed put. They passed so close the hair on my arms moved. They also continued to blow through the stop sign at full speed. Fortunately, the other cars waited at the 4 way stop or there would have been a terrific crash a few yards in front of me. I can only think some kind of distracted driving was to blame.

Rode 29 miles on Sunday, it was 45-51' and sunny. but the wind made it feel colder specially in the morning. I spun alot more to keep warm and for the most part it worked great.

We're being hit with what we Californians refer to as a cold front, 60 degrees max today.
Everyone was wearing coats and long pants today at the park...except me...I'm holding on to summer still.

My weekend riding was interesting and entertaining at least to some as I tried to learn how to use clipin pedals (no I won't call them clipless). The first part of Sat morning was attempting to get used to them while stationary and it was a struggle. I was doing all the stuff I read/saw but it wasn't going well. I thought it might need some momentum so I rode around in the backyard in low gear...still a struggle and had my Laugh-In moment
Tried again in the afternoon and found that though all of the stuff I read said to kick your heel out it was easier if I rotated my heel in. I practiced this and it seemed much better. Ran some laps in the backyard and felt more confident so I headed out into the neighbourhood and did not have any issues. I followed this up with a 27 mile ride and all went well though I may need to do some fitting still since my left leg was sore at the back of my knee (this happened last week too but I thought that might just be my knee acting up). It wasn't as bad as last week so it isnt the pedals/shoes but I did some reading and I read it might be due to the seat being too high. I didn't think I had different lenght legs but maybe they are slightly different. My right leg is fine so I'm not sure but I'll probably make a slight adjustment and see

I was out of town helping a triathlete friend with a half-Ironman. But we pre-rode the course, and I got a few miles in Saturday as well.

A couple photos of the views from the place we started our ride.

And if you click the photos, you'll see lots more from Saturday's ride too.
