Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Made in China tyres, safe?

Hi, I'm pretty new to road cycling. I found what seems like a pretty good deal on ebay: 2 outers and 2 inners for £22. I get the feeling they are made in China though.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rd-Bike-Hy...-/221201703852

I dont need top of the range tyres, but I was just wondering about the safety/quality of them. Can I use them for everyday use?

Yes, it does. But it also says you get 2 tires and 2 tubes which would be a strange description if they were really tubulars (sew-ups) where the tube is part of the tire.

Haven't had any issues with most tires made in China, but would be a little leery of tires sold without any brand-name association and corresponding reputation that could be lost if the tires aren't of decent quality.

Nothing wrong with things from China but those tyres just look really nasty. The only remarkable thing about them is that they are red?

On one usually have some tyre bargains, i'm sure you can do better.

Nothing wrong with made in China, plenty of good products are, but the is also a lot of junk, which these look to fall into, not sure they are worth £2.00 definitely not £20

Plenty of better tires available, as #jezmellors notes Planet X do some great deals, this is a similar bundle to the ebay link, but from a high quality branded manufacture https://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/...ti_tyre_bundle

Thanks for the warnings. I think I'll stick with the more well known brands.

You get what you pay for. If money is the issue, I would go to your LBS and find an economy tire. At least you would be able to see what you are getting.

odds are your car tires are made in china

and your shoes
and a good portion of your clothes
and a good 50% of your consumer electronics...

you don't seem to have an issue with those things, so why a bike tire?

not saying the deal doesn't seem shady to me, just pointing out a blatant prejudice that's unfounded

Process, supply chain, and culture of the work environment are all extremely important, and all part of and subservient to materials, design and QC. Materials and QC include supply chain. Design includes the process. Quality systems includes management methods and culture.

Not saying you're wrong, but in 20 years of owning cars I've never seen 'made in china' on any of my tires, and a quick survey of the last 5 cars our household has had all show the OEM tires were made in the US or Japan. I'm sure they exist, but I'm surprised to hear you think the odds are most tires are chinese.

Maybe because he's not rocketing down a mountain at 45+mph on his TV?

Tires are no place to gamble. Could not purchase ebay tires myself, no matter where they were made.

Oy! They look like Cheng Shin tires. Safe? Yes. Good tires? Not really. If you want cheap, you'll like them. If you want good performance, you get what you pay for. Get some nice Panaracer or Grand Bois tires.

These are NOT good. Stay away.

I tried a pair that look identical. Mine were via amazon.com, were also a "two for" deal, and were very inexpensive ($25US for two tires, 700c x 25, red). Here is what I learned from my experiment:

1) They are stamped "max pressure 90 psi." That's not enough for a 25, especially given my 220 lb. dry weight.

2) They mounted up fine and felt okay. At first.

3) Yes, I fudged a bit on pressures, and rode them at 105 PSI.

4) Then, about six months into ownership, the front tire developed a thump-thump-thump, like a flat-spot. Inspection quickly revealed a bulge in the tire, about 2" long. Fail.

5) I swapped out the front, kept the rear, and within the next couple of rides, experienced the same on the rear. Both failed.

Yes, I put 15 PSI too much pressure in them, so you can blame the user. But any decent tire should have a bit of reserve strength built in, for hitting a sharp-edged bump or pot-hole, during which the pressure goes way up for an instant.

But, hey, they looked great! That said, I now have Vittoria Zaffiro 2 tires, also in red. Not only do they look good, but they ride very well.
