Winter is coming...
 

This morning on my commute, my Garmin 510 showed 25.4 degrees F.

The good, there weren't much wind and it was very nice and crisp air, and I had a section of the W&OD trail all to myself.

The bad, the Winter is coming.

Would you believe I'm already looking forward to it?

Still have snow on the ground at my house from 2 days ago.

I'm going to do more skiing this winter, which is going to mean less cycling (on weekends anyway).

I don't mind riding in the dark, that's what lights are for, and I do a lot of it after work to stay in shape. But the constant darkness and sunsets by 4:30 are pretty hard to take. And riding in the rain is no fun, fenders only delay the inevitable a little bit, nothing waterproof breathes well enough, etc. Better to have it come down as snow than rain, especially when you can go home at the end of the day.

I am lucky enough that my job allows me to leave before dark (around 3pm) on most days and I can pick up the work from home. In fact, I end up working more.

I'm coming out to your neck of the woods President's weekend, I think skiing around snoqualmie, mt baker, and crystal mountain? Something like that. I hear it's awesome.

My brother said to watch out so my dick and my knees don't freeze in the winter when biking. I'm not sure how serious he was. But that's why I need tights to go over my bike shorts.

Really? Wow I wondered where this cold was coming from...

I like not sweating too much during winter rides, the downside is getting changed afterwards without sweating. :lol: ;)

Snoqualmie is probably the least awesome (but still not bad) of those choices, it's also the closest to Seattle so you get more time on the slopes. Crystal Mountain is right next door to Rainier, and Baker might be the best of the best, it can be hard to get good weather up there though.

If you're going to be biking around Seattle or anywhere near Puget Sound, it probably won't be that cold. Winter weather here usually means 40 to 45 degrees F and drizzle. We get cold snaps but they don't last very long. It tends to snow once a year and melt off by the next day, maybe once every decade we get a big snow that takes a few days to clear up. It still feels cold because of the wet, but it's not like the east coast.

we have been having cold temps with wind, so that's not a bonus. Had to break out my mittens.

I have a pair of winter gloves I bought last year that are cycling specific. They have gel inserts in the palms.
They're a bit warm for early winter cause I sweat in them, but are perfect for mid/late winter when the wind chill factor is in the negative.

Summer is coming
 

This evening on our after work ride, the weather site showed 13 degrees C.

The good, there weren't much wind and it wasn't raining.

The better, this weekend is supposed to great with sunshine and temps in the low 20s. :)



You winter folk might need to plan a trip to a warmer part of the world. :D

Already got two full overnight rides in this spring and plan at least one more over summer. Bring it on.

Then it was probably like 42 in reality. Or maybe minus 10. Worst. Ever. Thermometer.

I don't like riding in the dark so the commuting is over (that and my home boss also doesn't like me to ride in the dark as there are too many A$$holes around here who can't see in the light let alone in the dark). I also don't like riding in the rain (winter is rainy season) but lately it has been drier than Death Valley around here (and that's no joke it has been). We desperately need the rain and I hope it comes soon but it doesn't look good. It does mean however that riding continues at least on the weekends or days I have off

I feel like it's probably a little bit safer riding in the dark than in broad daylight. That's assuming you have bright head and tail lights on your bike. You can "blend into" the background and your surroundings at midday, especially when drivers are concentrating on looking out for other cars and their focus is on the places where cars will be. At night, your lights grab their attention and let them know you're there.

I rode with someone last night, it was probably the last night above 50 degrees and I wore shorts. My knees were actually sore and he recommended, along with others that keeping knees warm is very important, but why? Do they tighten up in the cold, can injuries happen due to this? Is it more of a comfort thing?

I'm no Dr so I can't tell you what the cold weather does to the knees, but I will offer this...

when my knees get cold it make my ride less enjoyable....knee warmers are inexpesive, heck even leg warmers won't break the bank, get yourself a couple sets.

long underwear has saved my skin, quite literally, since I started cold weather riding.

I put some full coverage fenders on the single-speed steel winter bike. That along with the 32MM tires, Elite Gel Cuissi cages, Superflash Turbo and Magicshine ensures I'm ready for the Chicago winter. It weighs about 30 pounds and looks like something that escaped the Road Warrior set.
