Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling/Exercise Reports - Nov 16/17

So ... are you all still cycling outside, or have some of you moved inside? Are you cycling, or are you doing other sports? Tell us what you're up to this weekend.

Saturday - Rowan and I had quite a varied day today.

We started with a ride across the bridge to the centre of town where we watched the Christmas parade.
Then we cycled to Salamanca Market, and spent a while walking around there and looking at all the stuff.
Then we cycled up to the local tip recycle shop, and had a wander around there.
Then we cycled to the Botanical Gardens, and had a wander around there.
And finally, we cycled home.

All up ... 20 km of cycling, plus lots of walking

It was a bright sunny day, with a high of 19C. We're enjoying the beautiful spring-time weather.

I planned on doing a 60 mile ride from Brooklyn to Alpine NJ and back. It was a beautiful day, but it had started off with rain so I waited until 11 or so to get going so I wouldn't get splattered. I made it to Alpine, with the hill climb at the end, and turned back after eating and drinking a little. Then I stopped at the bike shop on the way back to the bridge and it was when I got back on that I realized I made a mistake. The sun was getting lower and it got cold. I hopped onto the long silver sag wagon after I crossed back into NYC. It just isn't worth the 14 slow city miles that I skipped to be cold.

Tomorrow it's indoors on the trainer, football, and home brewing. I'll be making my favorite IPA.

Thurs: ran 4mi.. calves hated that idea. need to back down the mileage and get used to it again.

Fri: rode 48mi to preview the group ride route for this sunday. weather was right in that zone where you're perfectly dressed for about 5 miles and the rest is all wonky.

sat: wrote paper that is due in 3 weeks so I don't have to think about it.

Sun: group ride which should be in the mid 50F's should be pretty comfortable.

Nice weather on Saturday in Ithaca. 57 degrees, noticeable and annoying wind (@ 10 mph for a lot of the ride) but not terrible. Knocked off 66 solo miles with 50 of those at 19.18 mph on 5-plus laps of a loop of 8.905 miles which is about as flat as it gets around here for a loop of that length (31 feet per mile of "climbing" but most of that is a 1.4-mile slope with nothing above 4% grade for short bits). Pretty good weather for mid-November in this town.

Planning on a "ride till I drop" ride on Sunday. So far I've only done a 50 mile ride. My plan is try to aim for 60 miles but if my body lets me go further, I will. I started cycling two months ago and my goal is to do a 100 mile ride before the end of the year. I'm not planning on entering a century ride or any competitive event. I'm just doing it as a personal goal.

Tomales loop- one of the standards, & what passes for a flat ride around here- 75 miles, 5,000'+ climbing 16mph ave

Some headwind, but tailwind later, so it worked out pretty well. The weather keeps holding, so why not ride?

At one stop, there were about 75 canada geese.

Rode a 400k yesterday. Two other riders stayed with us all the way south, into the headwind, then we split up on the way back in. Slow ride for us at 22 hours.

Did 33 miles Friday; I kind of distilled my main 56-mi summer ride into the hilliest elements.... 2400 feet of climbing... I called the route "Winter's Bone" on my ride mapping app.

My new Roubaix gets picked up tomorrow (!) so, weather permitting, it will be a ride magnet next week I suspect.

Update! Got a text from a buddy at 1:46 and we were on the road an hour later. 28 miles, some nice hills, rolled in as dusk was getting pretty well established.

Weather was iffy, the day was late, and NFL was on TV..... we did good to get out and do it!

Curious, where did you ride?

I went on a group ride Saturday out of Inverness. 41 miles with no rain (19-20 mph pace)...it had rained all day Friday, and then started again about 30 minutes after we finished our ride. But the ride was perfect with 65-72 degree weather and overcast skies. This coming Saturday they're predicting 81 degrees and mostly sunny.

The usual Sunday group ride, more or less. 45.7 miles on our tandem. Innes Arden for those in the area. Near the start, we took advantage of a powerful tail wind to bridge up to the SFP* group and hung with them the whole ride. Butchered ourselves. Average HR 91% of LT. I don't think I've ever ridden that hard. For sure Stoker hasn't. I think it's the weight work. Or the weight loss. Or the exact tantalizing pace of the SFP that kept us right on the edge.

There's a 20 mile MUP in my area and I just went back and forth for exercise. The MUP is actually longer than 20 miles but the extended part of it has very steep hills which I avoided because I don't want to be tired out. I just started cycling two months ago so I may tackle that part at another time.

There's no hills in Orlando back off the miles and do 40 and add the hills to mix it up.

Funny you mentioned it. I saw that article in the Orlando Sentinel in the week of the event. As a newbie and haven't participated in any centuries, when you are participating in the event (let say, a century) are the paths (the roads) closed just for the cyclists or are the roads open for the public to drive through?

Have you been to Clermont? That's where I was referring to. My location is listed as Orlando but it doesn't mean I live there. Anyone who is familiar with Clermont knows how hilly it is. It's insane if you ask me. Then again, I'm still a noob

John, The roads are not closed. But there are Police at (almost) every intersection stopping traffic and allowing riders to go ahead. There are motorcycle ******* riding along much of the course alerting motorists of an event going on. And SAG vehicles picking up disabled bikes (and riders). It was my first HH, but I think the guys that plan the route must be a bit sadistic Every time you think, "well we can't keep going up hill much longer", you turn a corner and go up some more ! Great event, highly recommend, but get in shape or you'll be walking uphill a lot.
