for those who listen to music what earbuds do you use

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cycling, music and headphones is a really bad combination.

Let us know when you get hit by vehicle you did not hear coming ok?

Probably none, probably all of them, never read about any report of the guys using headphones to be honest with you.

Did not want to sound mean, but seriously... not a good idea because you need to have all your senses alert 2000 % man. Even if somebody talks to you, or shout at you in the road for anything. But it is your call anyways, not mine.

What you could do is to use the search engine here or open another thread asking their personal experience using headphones you know. IME many use them often till they have an accident or have a close call of any type (did not hear something obviously).

Good luck

I find the usual earbuds that hang in the ear increase wind noise too much so prefer the ones that seal in the ear canal. I use Westone UM-1s which work great with the right tip. They're in the $100 range but there are similar less expensive earphones out there.

Of course be aware that these greatly attenuate ambient sounds and music will further mask sounds, so use with that understanding.

I'm currently using sennheiser ocx 685i. They're really nice because you still have the little remote thingy on there to change the volume and browse through songs. They also stay in your ear very well because they come with 3 different sizes of earbuds. You can get them around 50 bucks. Downside is that they can be a bit fragile if you're just carrying them loose in your pockets. And as mentioned above, they dim ambient sounds really well. Here's a link.

My personal opinion is if you are going to be hit from behind, it's going to happen ear buds or not. A car doesn't sound any different when its over the white line. Until they equip the roads with an alarm that goes off when a car breaches the white line, you are getting hit.

I use JVC Marshmallows. Cheap and good sound. Comfortable and don't slide out. In city traffic, I only keep the right side in so I can hear whats going on to my left. Country roads out of the city, I put in both sides and fade into the ride.

Although I don't use them on the bike frequently, I have had good luck with Etymotics.

https://www.etymotic.com/ephp/mc5.html

They are comfortable and seal out wind noise well. Lots of other good options too.

Klipsch Image S4II, Westone 4, Shure SE535, skullcandy whatchamahcallits, Vsonic GR-07's.
Best to use a pair you would not cry over if it gets soaked in sweat and stops working.

+1. Even knowing that a car has crossed into the bike lane wouldn't be much help.

Be alert, don't zone out, and you should be fine. Music in one ear, and the other ear for your surroundings.

I use these. They work and fit great (on the bike and great for jogging too)! Earloop keeps them from going anywhere....very secure fit.

My question is this to the poster..............You ride with traffic so how would that save you considering if like most cyclist you ride the right hand of the road if they (the cager) was going to hit you they would regardless with buds or without????

I think that being able to hear surroundings without playing music too loud is okay. I work at a agency I have to answer my calls and ride with my phones MP3 playing music and so I can field calls on the fly. In fact I took a call once screaming down a descent at over 30 mph! So I think your logic may be just a tad off. Not totally but just a tad.

Exactly how I do it. I keep the bud in my right ear and my left free to hear traffic since that is the side which vehicles come around.

Ear buds/music don't kill. I can hear just fine with mine in. I don't turn them up too loud just because I want to save my hearing. To be honest though, if I had the choice of rather to hear a car just before it ran me over or not, I't choose not. If it's going to happen, there isn't much you're going to do in that short amount of time.

For the record, I've ridden 40+ years without music and just started to ride with them a bit over a year ago. I ride mostly alone adn would never use them with other riders.

I use the ones that came with my S4 I like to be able to change music, answer the phone, make a call, whatever. All I have tired are still noisy in the wind.

Bose IE2 for the win! I absolutely love love LOVE these earphones for riding. The comfort gel piece is so soft and comfortable, you can ride all day (I only use my right ear) and it won't get painful. Not sealing, so you can still hear around you.

And they will NEVER fall out no matter how much you sweat!!!
