Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Racer or sport Cannondale?

I'm a 39 year old out of shape bicyclist. I have about 40 lbs to loose. I am getting a new road bike but I get different opinions from different stores. On my old bike my legs hit my stomach while riding and it is very uncomfortable.I want a bike to be comfortable for my longest rides which will be about 50 miles. My question is shoud I get a sport bike(Cannondale Sport 900) with an adjustable stem or a race bike(Cannondale R1000) and put a riser stem on till I loose weight? Would a the racer be comfortable for longer rides without a big gut? Any comments would be appreciated.

Pat

Hi Pat, I know what you mean about hitting the gut and it being annoying. I look at it as an incentive to lose weight . What other differences are there between the two bikes? If the primary difference is an adjustable stem I'd buy the bike with the better components on it. You can always put an adjustable stem on the bike if it doesn't come with one.

The S900 should have a more forgiving ride and slacker geometry for easier handleing. The R1000 is just a few years off from being C'dale's top of the line racing frame. Strictly for fitness, not race training, I'd get the S900.

Hi Zoned! I am new to cycling and got the Cannondale SR800. I can't compare it to the 1000 because I never test drove that one. This is an individual thing, of course, but I love my new bike. The seat suspension makes it more comfortable, and the different hand positions it allows are helpful to me. Obviously, the more comfy you are on your bike, the farther you'll ride and the more fit you'll become. Good luck! Have fun.

Thanks.I want to be comfortable and I'm not going to race. I think I'll get the SR 800.

I hate when my stomach hits my legs... of course that is with a fliped stem in the drops with a flat back. I still have about 20 pounds to loose.

I agree for fitness and a more confortable ride go with the sport...

I'm the same age as you and weighed 205 lbs a year ago. After 3000 km (1850 miles?) last season I lost 30 lbs. That's an average of 1lb per 100 km (62miles) .......or 1lb per 3.5 hours of riding!
Truth be known I actually lost the first 25 lbs in less than 2 months. I have a tonne more energy now! YMMV

Personally, I'd go for the 'sport road' bike. For exercise/recreation the 'sport' components will be fine quality. Shaving a few grams off the bike won't matter for you right now.

My bike is a Cannondale r700 Warrior (not the current version of the RW, but more like a Sport Road with drops, and now all 105. With a gut you'll wanna be more upright. With a higher stem you're more apt to use the drops. I've swapped my seat to a SSM Aero which made a HUGE diff. in comfort.

BTW. I'm still hoping to lose another 10 lbs
