Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Got a ****ing flat on the first climb. I've had bad luck with that lately. One was a tack, another was a small nail that seemed perfectly designed to kill bike tires. I guess the good news is that neither one was quite big enough to ruin my tire.

Other than the flat it was a good day. High of 50 and no wind.

I just did my last ride of the year; a 1.6 mile shake down ride on my newly built Bertoni. Can't wait until tomorrow. Happy New Year!

Took a quick ride in Central Park. No roadies out today. Was off the saddle and hit a hidden dip on Park Ave. the stem hit my pubic bone. Ouch. Much the same for the year 2013 - a overall knock to the pubic bone. Can't wait till 2014!

A whopping 12.8 mile trip to Performance bike for a cone wrench, then back to fix my boneheaded friend's front hub which was loose enough to allow the wheel to move a full centimeter.
He brought it over for me to remove the chain for a good clean & lube.
"Dude, what's up with your wheel?"
"I don't know, it's been like that for a while"

It was a bone chilling 60°

24km today, but my last "real" 2013 ride was on Sunday, 6hrs/120 km mostly on dirt roads (I like to call them strade bianche), 36º C (southern hemisphere). Drank about 5l of water, and still lost 2kg, but 4hrs later my weight was normal again.

Did a 15 mile ride with one of my sons. He hasn't been riding much since a bad crash last year in a Cat 2 Crit (broken femur) although he's fully healed. Beautiful weather and were able to chat some along the way. I'm going to get a kid stoker kit for my tandem so he can take his 6 y/o on the back with the 11 y/o on his own bike. My son is out of shape, but still very strong and the 6 y/o is very tenacious so they should be a formidable team! Good way to end the year cycling wise.

Twenty miles late afternoon on my new Tarmac Expert along the coast in San Diego. I guessed right on the temperature and clothing.

A ride up the back side of Mt. Soledad. Then back down through La Jolla, taking the coast back to Point Loma. I think it was around 35 miles.

75km around town to finish off the Festive500. I've ridden the same roads countless times, but considering that it's the last ride of the calendar year there's some additional satisfaction I guess.

20 miles with the spouse, a nice lunch with a good wine. We were disappointed, though it was about 65º it was only partly sunny. Maybe it will be a little nicer tomorrow.

20 miles and 6000' of climbing up Mt Haleakala, and then 20 miles down. There is no downhill or level ground on the entire trip up, or vice versa. I only wish I had more in me to make it to the top. 80 and sunny,as it always is on Maui.

I also rode the bike back to the rental shop today, but that doesn't count.

Tomorrow back to Brooklyn, brrrr.

I am in the middle of base training. The last ride was this morning on the trainer - 2 hours using TrainerRoad. Not very sexy, but quite effective.

I took a ride on the lake tonight, just to say that I did. Only one insurmountable problem at these temperatures is cold face and fogged glasses. This is my C.L. $80 mtb. Mechanically the bike is fine since I flushed and re-lubed the freehub (it spins backwards and locks forwards now in the cold, unlike my last ride), ran light lube in the shifters (they didn't freeze up!) and cleaned/lubed the cables. (I should replace the housings.) All I had was Prolink, hope that was ok.

25 miles starting with a 1000ft climb, finished off with most of our usual Saturday loop. Got a few nice PRs, even on bits where I thought I was dying.
