Almost every recreational cyclist pedals below that, and you don't find cyclist carcasses along side the road. Now, everyone doesn't need to ride a single speed, but they don't need wifli triples either. Grrrrr.
I never understood the "your knees will hate if you pedal below XX rpm!" hoopla, either. I mean, maybe if you're grinding it out to the point that your form/joint alignment goes to ****, yeah... but that has nothing to do with rpm in and of itself; if it's okay for me to pedal at x watts at 90 rpm, what's the harm in pedaling at that same x watts at 40 rpm as long as form doesn't suffer?

I can make better power numbers for longer intervals at low (75-80) cadence, but doing that in a race or on a sporty ride does not work because the ability to accelerate in response to a surge is notsogood.

i never understand the gearing thing about keep your cadence above 90. when my cadence drops it is because it is hard to pedal. it ain't a choice.

Well in my case my joint alignment is ****ed up before I even get on a bike. Bad skeleton. I wish I was lucky enough to have knees that didn't object to low rpms.

See, this is logical discourse. Some of the best local triathletes and TT guys I know pedal at 70 to 80 all the time, pushing big gears. But they ride for constant effort and don't need to plan for surges. Road guys conserve matches for the unexpected, because a win is crossing the line first. TT guys manage splits, because they want constant.

And gnome, I do agree that same wattage lower RPM means more knee force. Everything is a balance, and if someone favors one or the other, that is intelligent. It just seems BF posters talk about cadence over 80 is the only answer all the time.

Mrs. rjones28's trike has a triple and a pie plate cassette. 30/42/52 and 12-36. Should be able to go straight up at 90 rpm.

Is she going to do P2P with us this year? Even if she did shorter one we could synchronize the last 25 or so miles.
