Not necessarily. The more savvy, the more likely you are to know exactly what's important to you - that doesn't lean one way or the other. Personally, I like the ability to upgrade. I know that, every two or three years, I can essentially have a new computer for the cost of a motherboard and CPU (~$300).

That's probably a good baseline for most consumers. Unfortunately, that doesn't really lean one way or the other, either, no matter what marketing or public perception may have you believe. Everybody is picking hardware from the same pool - whether it's in a PC or a Mac, a Seagate hard drive is a Seagate hard drive, an Intel CPU is an Intel CPU, etc.

That's been the perception for many, many years, based probably on the fact that Mac has always been touted as "easy to use". But some of the sharpest computer people I know use a Mac at home, because what it really boils down to is accomplishing tasks with the least amount of aggravation.

Lots of hobbyists like to consider themselves superior to Mac users, but they're too dumb to realize that what's a hobby to them is just somebody else's pain in the ass. Most people don't want to take the time to play around with their computer, they just want to use it to get something done . . . . so they can move on to something else.

Why do you want a new computer every two or three years? Is it n+1?

May be something like that, but it's nice for compute-heavy processes. If I'm encoding audio or video or exporting a bunch of photos - anything that would make a time-until-complete clock pop up... well, I want that to go faster. Another thing that can make me want to upgrade is efficiency - in the last few generations of CPUs, we've seen calculations speed up considerably while using a lot less energy, which means a lower utility bill (I always have at least one computer on), less heat and less noise from fans needed to dissipate that heat. At this point, my computer has plenty of juice (for now) and can't be heard above background noise... so what's next? I like the idea of keeping the performance and making it smaller, so that'll probably be the next upgrade.

I know a guy with the ultimate job: he designs war simulations for the DOD.

He loves Apple products; however, the DOD requires PC, so that's what he uses for design.
