Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Got out of the metro Knoxville bubble for a change and had cycling escapades in Blount County.

An quiet, early morning 23-mile jaunt along the Little River.

[File photo]

Then, in the late afternoon, a 27-mile ride up to Cades Cove.

[File photo]

Unfortunately, I did not have time to ride around the cover--just climbed up there and turned around. First time I've done a multi-mile climb in a year, probably. I could tell.

Interestingly, there's way less traffic on January afternoon than there is in the summer. Except I did have a couple cars coming after me right when I reached the small tunnel. I was nervous the lead might hit me because it was moving and there wasn't a lot of light [late afternoon]. Then, when I exited the tunnel, the rocky face along the road shot this chunk of glare ice just a few feet in front of me. Couple seconds later and it could have been disaster.

I also saw a deer along the road. No tracking necessary.

Good day of riding, except for the balaclava. Much more peaceful than West Knox at 5 p.m.

I am around. My job is very busy at the moment from the cold. Main are breaking all over the place, and I worked through the holidays. I'll get caught up here shortly.

I think it might be a little warmer here tonight than it is in Knoxville. It was 45° a few minutes ago, when I went out with Benson.

it is 3 degrees here. No that is not a typo. The wind chill is -13. That is Fahrenheit for all you foreigners. If I wanted to live someplace this cold, I'd still live in Colorado. Holy crapola.

There's no place to go to escape it... not even the Sunshine State. I might actually have to fire up the heater tonight. First time in about 2 years.

Air temp of -21° right now, wind chill significantly lower. Expected high today of -13°. I don't think that anyone is leaving the house today - not for work, errands, food, not for anything. Well, other than a couple quick trips outside to let the dog do her business.
