Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I think he finally went to bed . . . it's roughly 1:30AM his time.

Unless he went out to eat some more.

I'd be worried about my hair falling out. You've had a lot of stress all at once, poor kid. Can I still send *hugs* nearly twenty-four hours after your original post? Whoops! Too late.

wut.
I'm going to give you some advice that you probably won't take and then, if you want me to, I'll do my best to explain what's up. Get ride of your ex ex's bike. If you want lady friends or potential to lady friends to ride with you then it needs to be a bike not "contaminated" to use LAJ's word bike. I think it's nice to have a bike on hand, in case the lady in question rides one but doesn't currently have one, but it can't be one that you bought specifically for someone else.

Here's why I think your current ex can now ride the bike: Everyone has a romantic history- unless you get involved with someone who doesn't and that opens up a whole different can of worms, I don't recommend it, and no that person is not LoP- but it's not something we think about on a regular basis. Most women for the most part want to believe that they are your future and also maintain the illusion that nothing and no one existed before them. (Obviously this is more difficult if you have children because those kids didn't just drop from the sky.) That bike- like a kid- is a very tangible reminder that there was most *definitely* someone before her and someone who, with a greater or lesser amount of success, you tried to get involved in the very same things you've tried to involve her in. And she may even have wondered why you held onto the bike and if you regretted no longer being with the ex ex, etc etc. #contaminated

We, as people, don't have the same expectations/delusions about our friendships that we do about romantic relationships. Because you all are just friends now, she knows she's not your future so she no longer needs to wipe out your past, and she is, in fact, or seems to be happy to be part of that past and present. And she's riding with you finally which is what you wanted although not the way you wanted it to happen.

But seriously, avoid all this mess in the future by getting rid of the ex ex's bike now.

So 25 years later you married someone who looked a lot like your dream girl or 25 years later you got *that* girl? And whatever happened to the bike?

The bike is a funny story... I rode it for many years... and then sold it on Craigslist to buy a mountain bike. (DUMB!) I regretted selling it almost instantly. About 7 years later, I decided that I needed to get back into road cycling, so I stopped into a LBS... and there in the row of "trade-ins" was my bike. It still had the "Criterium" sticker that I had put on it years before. SO... I bought it back.

And my wife looks (IMO) a LOT like the poster girl. (At least she did when she was blonde.)

Very cool on both counts. Lot of that no longer blonde thing going around. I surprised LoP when he got back to town.

I don't think it has anything to do with misunderestimating. I think it comes from reaching a point in my life where I realize a) there is such a thing as bad sex and b) I'm not willing to waste three hours of my life, that I'm not getting back, sitting through something I don't enjoy in hopes there might be sex at the end when I could spend those three hours in a manner I enjoy and be assured there will be um sex at the end. That being said, if I know for certain there's going to be sex later, especially if there's also going to be coffee, I will sit through a talk on time-share dentistry.
